The Staffroom is located on the ground floor of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and is a long, paneled room with mismatched sofas and cushioned chairs. Bookshelves line the walls, and the room caters to all of the professors with its wealth of knowledge, rivaled only by the Hogwarts library. The entrance to this room is guarded by two stone Gargoyles that can talk.

Professor Mills sat in his favourite armchair by the fireplace, flicking through a newspaper with an air of disdain about his face. He took a quill from the side table and scribbled out a few lines of the "Arithmancy Today" column, muttering under his breath. "She never did know what she was talking about. Fancy mixing up the Agrippan and Chaldean methods like that. You know, I'm almost insulted."

"Who is it this time? You have always hated it when they publish mistakes like that." Alysia Harrison cracked a good-natured smile from the opposing seat, glancing up from her stack of parchment to observe her colleague ranting over the next incompetent arithmetician before resuming her marking, keeping an ear tuned into their conversation. She understood very little about Arithmancy yet she made sure to smile and nod all the same, making the odd comment whenever it was appropriate.

"Verity Hallworth," he said, tone a little bitter as he scribbled above the crossings-out and folded the newspaper again to place it on the table. "She was in the year above me when I was studying Advanced Arithmancy. The teacher always preferred her to anyone else, although it's fairly clear now that it was a waste of time. Honestly, methods are one of the most basic parts of Arithmancy - she's lost her touch."

Callum looked up from his own paper, eyebrows raised. "And what is she doing now?"

"Writing, or so it would seem," he said, toying with the quill between his fingers before placing it delicately on top of the folded newspaper. "She's had this column for a few weeks, but I've never noticed a slip up this bad."

"Perhaps you should make the best of it and allow your students to critique her work."

"Oh I will, don't worry," the professor said, knotting his fingers together almost gleefully. "It could end up becoming a weekly thing."

Callum flipped a page, giving the other teacher a wry smile. "You really must have hated her."

"Hate's a strong word," he said matter-of-factly. "Either way, I've not seen her for a good five years."

"Maybe you should contact her to notify her of the mistakes? Seems the honorable thing to do, anyhow."

"Yes, it is," he said with a broad smile. "How are your classes going, Professor Abernathy?"

"As usual. The first years are about a month behind in their lessons, the N.E.W.T. students still can't change a tree to a proper fountain.... The works."

He chuckled. "That bad? My OWL students are surprisingly competent, although the seventh year struggles a lot with deadlines."

"You know how seventh years are. They get quite lazy," Callum murmured, smiling. "But yes, that bad. Still, they'll be ready for exams, I think. They always manage to be."

"They're fantastic," he mused, a little pride in his voice. "You know one of my fifth year students came up with a brilliant theory the other day. Wrong, of course, but still very interesting."

"She noticed a distinct correlation between the equation for numerical goodness in a person's name and their social number. Very interesting stuff, but not a consistent theory, and one that has unfortunately been explored before."

Callum looked interested, eyes darting above his paper. "And which student would that be?"

"Sylvie Woolsworth, Slytherin," he replied. "A promising Arithmancer if I ever knew one."
