"At least those that do decide to stay are very dedicated students. The fifth years are promising."

"The seventh years need to get a move on," he said, shaking his head lightly as he bent to pick up his books, checking the time on his watch as he did so. "Anyway, I have a lesson starting in five minutes and I have to set up."

"Professor Mills, please," he said through gritted teeth, forcing a pleasant smile as he rose to his feet.

Callum snorted, flipping a page in his paper. "Whatever you please."

He furrowed his brows slightly as he left the room. One of these days I'm going to get my name legally changed.

Alysia glanced up at the clock an hour later, having spent the majority of her free period marking homework for her third year class that afternoon, scrawling across the scrolls in red ink to correct any mistakes and to leave helpful comments in her neat, cursive script along the way. Despite being only third years, her youngest class showed great potential which left the professor with a sense of pride that had put her in a better mood than usual.

Professor Mills pushed his way into the staff room, abandoning his blazer onto the back of his armchair and dropping the stack of O.W.L. practice papers he was carrying onto the side table with a loud thunk. Letting out a disgruntled sigh, the Arithmancy professor produced his bright purple ink and pheasant-feather quill to begin the long process of marking them.

"So how are your O.W.L students holding up?" She asked idly as the Arithmancy professor entered the staff room, glancing up briefly from her mug of something steaming that was held tightly in her hands. "Are you putting their noses to the grindstone? The summer exams come a lot quicker than we'd like this side of Christmas."

"They're not bad," he said, glancing up at her. "Mock results were all O's and E's, so I'm not really worried at this stage. It's the N.E.W.T. students I'm concerned about, to be honest."

"Oh?" She took a sip, pulling a face before setting her drink onto the coffee table that lay before her. "N.E.W.T standard subjects always expect a lot more from students than O.W.Ls do, it's a huge jump, even in Ancient Runes, but surely they're okay?"

"They're perfectly capable of doing the work, they just seem to have no motivation," he sighed. "Anyway, let's talk about something else. I hate getting away from the students only to talk about them more with my colleagues."

"Well... How was your holiday? It hasn't been too long since we've gotten back into the usual school routine and the weather is still as horrendous as it ever was." She smiled lightly, tapping the recently marked papers with her wand. "It's no better down south, surprise surprise."

"It was okay," he said, shrugging. "We don't really go out of our way to make Christmas and New Year special. I stay with my parents and my younger sister turns up sometimes from Morocco or Ibiza, or wherever she happens to be. What about your holiday?"

"I met up with some old classmates from school who're still invested in Ancient Runes." She smiled fondly at the memory whilst the papers lifted into the air and neatly tucked themselves into her bag. "We spent a week testing out magical circles. I know most wizards don't bother with them nowadays but they're frightfully powerful if you find the time to construct one with the right runic sequence. It was a literal blast."

He smiled. "Sounds like you had a great time. What about family? Did you not go and see them over Cheistmas at all?"

"For the first week." She confirmed. "We did the whole gift exchange as usual and got somewhat drunk but er, not to the point of arguing on the front lawn to embarrass the rest of the family in front of the neighbours. It actually went rather smoothly if I do say so myself."

"I take it the arguing-on-the-lawn thing has happened before then?" he flicked over a page in the booklet he was studying, amused. "Usually my sister and I argue after she's had too much to drink, although it's not uncommon for us to tell at our parents either. It's childish, really."

"And we're supposed to be the responsible adults of this community." She laughed lightly. "My brothers always got rather argumentative after having a drink or two but the last time it happened, my father was far too gone to stop them like he usually does."

"How many brothers do you have?" Professor Mills asked curiously, leaning forwards slightly in his chair.
