"Ah, yes. She's quite interested in Arithmancy. Always talks about it in my class as well."

"I'm thinking of starting a club for the lower years. Just to get them interested," he mused. "I'm thinking of asking her to run it, if she's not too busy with revision."

"That might be interesting. There aren't nearly enough clubs at this school."

Professor Mills nodded vacantly. "There was a duelling club when I was a student here. I'm not sure what happened to that."

"I remember it ended when I was in sixth year," Callum sighed. "And a friend of mine was a bit... overzealous."

He snorted. "I'm not going to ask what happened."

"I think it's best you don't," he sighed. "Either way, I think it's best we don't re-establish the dueling club just yet. There is still purple spray paint on a few of the chandelier."

The Arithmancy professor raised his eyebrows, hesitating for a moment. "Right... Well, at least an Arithmancy club would be... civilised."

"What would you do in an Arithmancy club? Expose students to the subject before they enter?"

"Yes," he said, swinging his legs beneath him. "And explore the context behind it. The first unit of the O.W.L. paper is actually based on the history of Arithmancy."

"Perhaps you can invite arithmancers to come talk to them."

"Well I know who I'm not inviting," he said with a wry smile, glancing across at the newspaper and shaking his head.

"You haven't read it, it was quite frankly insulting," he said, putting on a straight face. "She muddled up the different types of Arithmancy, got the character number for her own name wrong and proceeded to name herself as the best Arithmancer in her class, which we both know is a lie."

Callum raised his eyebrows. "That's dreadful, really. Perhaps you should send a letter to the editors."

"I'll get one of my students to do it," he said with a yawn. "I have far too much marking to do to even consider it. Although it would be very satisfying..."

Callum sighed, rubbing at his temples. "Marking. I don't even want to look at my red ink at this point. I spent all last night with the O.W.L. students' essays and I still haven't finished with those."

"I'm just glad that a third of the syllabus is practical work," Professor Mills said with a slight smile. "It's the O.W.L. advanced group I worry about - they're starting N.E.W.T. level stuff now for the extra qualification, and it's a massive step up from what they're used to. Still, the results usually speak for themselves. I've never yet had a class fail me."

"Meanwhile, I have students dropping my class as fast as they can, even when they're qualified to enter the N.E.W.T. level of the subject. Since Transfiguration stopped being a requirement for quite a few Ministry careers..."

"It's a daunting subject," he shrugged. "I remember when I took the O.W.L., I made most of it up because I hadn't revised."
