"Who knows?" She shrugged, pointedly ignoring the look she was receiving. "But no parents are going to stick a name they didn't like onto their child, it's illogical."

"You don't know my parents," he muttered, scribbling a few purple notes on the paper. "I wonder what's going on in their minds a lot."

"That's fair enough, the last generation certainly had a knack for keeping things to themselves but I highly doubt that it's some deep, dark secret." She glanced up at the clock before pulling out a thick tome from her bag and flipping it open to the bookmarked page with great care.

"What're you reading?" He asked, a little curious.

She lifted the book before remembering that the cover was textless and littered with numerous illegible runes. "Just rereading a few old passages on magic circles, they used to be a lot more popular in ancient times so it's much simpler to consult wizards who lived in those ages than anyone else."

"You and your circles," he mused, placing the work he was marking down and replacing it with an O.W.L. book instead. "I don't quite understand the appeal, but I suppose the geometry involved with them is quite interesting."

"They certainly are beautiful to look at," her fingers traced over a rather intricate 'circle' that had been inked onto the page, translating the runes inscribed on the edges in her mind. "And their uses aren't limited to age old magic, either. They can become surprisingly helpful in every day life with a bit of tweaking here and there."

"What sort of things can you do?" he asked, peering up from his work. Having never studied ancient runes himself, the theory behind it baffled him.

"Oh, they're wonderful." She gushed, flipping to a particular page as if she had done so many times before. "If you add the right runes and components to the circle, you can activate a specified sensory charm at the slightest touch, like an anti-theft device if you will. The best part about it is that due to the lack of an incantation, it won't be affected by the usual cancelling spells and overrides most spoken magic."

Bennett looked mildly impressed. "I didn't know there was that much to it. How interesting." He placed the papers aside, deciding a break was in order. "Erm, would you like some tea? Or pumpkin juice?"

"Tea is fine." She smiled pleasantly. "Oh but isn't it just simply fascinating? If you're interested, I could always go into more detail, my next class is after lunch so I have plenty of time."

"Certainly," he said with a smile, retreating to the table at the other end of the room to heat the water in the kettle with his wand. Raising his voice, the professor continued. "I never paid much attention to Ancient Runes; I took it in third year because I thought it looked interesting and then dropped it when I realised that I was hopeless at it."

"That's a shame, really, it's just like learning a new language so I suppose it isn't for everyone." She let out a resigned sigh, somewhat disappointed at the recent development. "Each to their own. I don't know a lick of Arithmancy, never mind differentiating between - what did you call them earlier? - Agrippan and Chal..?"

"Chaldean," he supplied with a wry smile. They're fairly similar, except the Chaldean method doesn't use the number 9 and the lettering is slightly different. Here we teach Agrippan until N.E.W.T. level, and then use both."

"Sounds complicated." She noted with mild interest. "So tell me, can you predict my future with numbers?"

"Arithmancy doesn't work quite like that," he said with a chuckle, taking a blank scarp of parchment from the pile of marking and dipping his quill briefly in the vibrant purple ink. "It functions by assigning numbers to letters, like the opposite of algebra, if you will. Except each number is fixed. From the sum of the numbers, you can draw up an accurate measure of what a person is like." It was a well rehearsed speech; one he repeated to multiple third year students during their first lessons. "Their flaws, their strengths, everything."

"Oh, I think understand." She nodded slowly, raising a hand to her chin. "So you can't actually foresee the future with Arithmancy? Then again, I think we'd all be a lot happier if we left that train of thought to the seers. So..." Alysia shuffled closer. "What do your numbers say about me?"

He paused before writing out her name, scribbling different numbers underneath. Once he had compiled a few totals, he glanced up at her. "Well, your number is aligned towards the good side, which is always a positive thing."

"Is it accurate 100% of the time?" She tilted her head to the side, thinking. "Because I'm sure if they had a talented Arithmancer during the past two wizarding wars, it'd be all too easy to discover which way a person's allegiance swayed."

"Nothing's ever 100%," he shrugged. "That was the simplest form of Arithmancy, and many people argue that it's a bit of a fad. Good and evil are, after all, social constructs."
