"That's... Kinda freaky but pretty cool at the same time." He looked rather impressed, nodding slowly. "How do they even come up with things like that? And without magic too? I bet it's all insanely complicated so I doubt I'd be able to get my head around it all."

"Their scientific knowledge is way beyond us," Rita shrugged. "If we actually listened to some of the things they say rather than just dismissing them, we really would be better off. Your friend was right that we could learn a lot."

He paused for a moment, scratching the back of his head. "Huh... I guess so. You seem to know a lot about muggle stuff though, are you really into that kind of thing or what? I doubt that most people our age would really care."

"My dad's a muggle," she responded matter-of-factly. "I've not seen him for years, but he used to take me out a lot after he and my mum split up. Sometimes we'd even go out as a family. We'd pile into the back of his Vauxhall Corsa - it's a type of car - and head down the M6 to wherever." Rita sounded content as she reminisced.

"Oh, that makes sense." What a time to be a pureblood. "It all sounds pretty nice though, do you miss him? I can't remember the last time my family got together to do something, my parents work 24/7 so there aren't many opportunities for stuff like that." If he was a little envious, it didn't show, besides, it wasn't like it made much difference either way as he devoted most of his time to flying.

"I'm sorry," she said quietly. "That must be difficult for you. And... Yes, I do miss him. But I'm glad he's out of our lives now, so mum and I can move on. After they split up it was like they were expecting me to take a side, and I didn't want to. But now, dad knows that mum will always come first for me because she's the one that stayed."

"Nah, it's no big deal." He shrugged, people could never really miss what they never had after all and it didn't hold any less true for him. "It must have been rough though, I have no idea how I'd react if I was ever thrown in that position. Ah... But it's all chill now, right? That must be good."

"Well I haven't heard from him for a couple of years," she said, eyes straying from him to the shelf behind him, focusing on a collection of books by his left shoulder. "But I'm fine. We're fine." She didn't mention the fact that she was currently living with her maternal grandparents, or that her mother relied entirely on her parents' pensions. Or that Catherine Chapman was too unstable mentally to provide for her own daughter. That, she decided firmly, was private.

"Ah, alright." He blinked, not wanting to press the girl that he barely knew for her entire life story. It was certainly neither his business nor his place to ask further. "Hey, are you sure that you don't want to at least make a start on your Potions essay? My research can wait but you'll inevitably have to hand it in at some point, just when depends on how foul of a mood the Potions Master is in."

"Nah, it's fine," Rita laughed. "Don't worry about it. I'll get it done tonight, and hand it in tomorrow morning. You get back to enchanting your broom, and I'll make sure to keep my mouth shut about it around the Slytherin team."

He shrugged, turning back to the tomes. "Whatever floats your boat, if it's okay with you I'm totally game. And-" Xander glanced towards her. "You really won't say anything to anyone else? It'll be a huge favour, thanks a ton."

"What's in it for me?" She joked, before swatting his arm to let him know that she wasn't serious. "Nah, it's cool. I don't particularly care for Quidditch anymore in any case, and it might annoy my ex if Slytherin lose. Who knows."

"Huh. I'd have thought that most people cared though because it influences the number of house points counting towards the House Cup." Xander commented, inwardly letting out a sigh of relief because really, what did he have to offer in exchange for her silence? It would take quite a bit of thought, that was for sure. "I guess Ravenclaw have it in the bag this year." He grinned.

"Oh, come on," she scoffed. "I've been at this school for six years. You don't seriously think that I give a damn about the house cup anymore, do you? I thought that was strictly a first and second year thing." Although, she mused, he did seem like the type to care about something as petty as that. All wide-eyed and exciteable.

"Oh no way," he began cheerfully. "You gotta factor in House pride, plus you get bragging rights throughout the entirety of summer so you can rub it in the faces of your friends from other house." Xander coughed. "That is, until they get pissed off and try to chuck the heaviest blunt object in the vicinity at your head."

"Most of my friends are in my own house," she laughed. "And even if I did spend much time with people in other houses, I don't think I'd rub it in their faces too much."

"You're missing out on the little things in life that make it so good." He cracked a grin. "You know, send them a second place rosette, make stupid puns on their house standing, live. I'm an awfully sore loser so I have to cash in on my victories whenever I can."

She raised a finely shaped eyebrow, studying him in a new light. "You're rather spiteful for a 'claw, you know? With an attitude like that, most would dump you in Slytherin." Having said that, she'd noticed that many of her friends were too preoccupied to be sore losers. House stereotypes were often so wrong.

Kaythan entered the Library in hopes that she could find something to do. So she went in search for a book, any book to keep her occupied until lunch. (She headed back to the Slytherin commmons room because she became frustrated with searching for a book)
