Vincent sat near the window, muttering to himself as he cut stems. He had to have the bouquet done by tomorrow and he still wasn't sure what other flowers to put in it. All he had right now was a pile of carnations in front of him, blocking his mind like a wall.

Giovanni held his hand out for her in silent wonder. The cat was so much better than he had imagined, nothing like the many dangerous strays he had encountered since the Infection. -- The bell of the flower shop rang as Ricardo entered. "Hello? Anyone here?" He'd never come around at this time of the day, and he wondered who was on the shift. He'd only ever met two of the shop's employees before. Maybe I'll meet someone new today.

Vincent stood quickly, broken from his daze by the jingling of the bell. "Oh! Hello sir, uh, welcome to McKinney's Floral Arrangements. How may I help you?" He stumbled a bit trying to get out from behind the work table to greet the costumer, silently praying he hadn't noticed. Unfortunately, his father had gone to run some errands, leaving Vincent alone to run the shop for the time being. Truthfully, he hadn't expected someone to show up on such a slow day, and he'd been hoping that would be the case.

Ricardo blinked in surprise as someone stumbled out behind the counter. He hadn't seen this one before. Definitely handsome, tall, with light skin and hair-- already he found himself imagining what the other man would look like in tattoo sleeves. Or maybe just something small around his wrist; he didn't look like the type to really approve of tattoos. He laid the lilies on the counter, offering a small smile. "I work across the street. Your shop let me borrow these lilies for some of my work."

Oh, Lord he's cute... "Oh, um, of course, yeah," Vincent stammered, running a hand through his ginger hair anxiously and subsequently messing it up. "You, um... You work across the street at that tattoo place, don't you?" he asked, trying to regain his composure. It was one thing to be surprised by a costumer. It was another to be surprised by a good-looking someone you never even knew existed, and he worked across the street.

"Yeah," he answered, smiling as e tried hard not to mentally tattoo the guy. Or not to study exactly how he looked when he ruffled his own hair. Or how the sunlight streaming through the windows caught itself in it. "You ever been inside?"

"N-No, actually. I haven't," he replied, picking up one of the lilies and twisting the stem between his fingers. Hmm... Lilies would go well with the carnations. Who knew a stranger would give me an answer? "I've certainly heard a lot about it. Your parlor usually seems pretty busy."

"So does your flower shop. Guess today's kind of a slow day for the both of us, right?" He chuckled, glancing through the large front windows of the shop at his tattoo parlor, silently noting a spot where he could probably see into the shop from his work stool. "Anyway, thank you guys for the flowers. So many people are demanding floral tattoos lately. Think I'll get Judas to do one for me soon."

"It's no trouble, really," Vincent assured him quickly, peering around Ricardo at the tattoo parlor. It was funny... He usually sat by the window while we worked, and he'd sometimes look over at the shop across the way, but he'd never in his life seen this guy. "Flowers are always popular, y'know? You said you're thinking of getting a tattoo of one? If you, uh, don't mind me asking, what kind?"

"I don't really know. Maybe an orchid of some sort? I've always liked how those look. Or carnations are always nice. Somewhere on my back, I think." Do I have any space left on my back?

Venus gladly rubbed her face against his hand. Finally, a human who showed the proper amount of admiration to her magnificence! "Do you remember ever having a cat?" Thea asked.

"Yes, orchids are very nice. We don't use them terribly often because they can sometimes be expensive depending on the variety. Moth orchids are always a popular choice—very easy to grow. Miltonias and Dendrobiums are my favorites, I think, along with Ladies of the Night since they smell so good." Vincent stopped himself a moment later, apologizing for rambling.

Ricardo grinned, the motion crinkling the skin around his eyes. "Don't worry about it. That's all pretty interesting. Hey, maybe sometime you can go into the parlor and help me out with some flower designs, yeah?"

"Oh, um, yeah sure I guess," Vincent replied, fidgeting with the dark green apron that covered his front. "I don't usually have many things to do around the shop here. That is, besides cleaning up. So I would have a bit of free time to come over if you need me to..." He lapsed into silence after that, avoiding Ricardo's gaze. Normally, if he had to tend to a costumer, they'd just order something or ask a question and leave. He'd never had to hold a conversation with one. In fact, he couldn't really remember the last time he'd had a conversation with anyone his age besides his rickety old blind cat that lived in the shop with them.

"Well, my coworkers will probably be missing me by now. I should get back," Ricardo sighed, almost reluctant to leave the cute flower shop employee. Still, he walked towards the door, remembering something as he pushed it open. "The name's Ricardo, by the way. Ricardo Montoya." -- "I... No. Not really," Giovanni mumbled. "I don't remember any cats in my life."

Vincent smiled one of his rare, albeit awkward smiles, absent-mindedly stroking one of the lilies' petals. "I'm Vincent McKinney. But um...of course, I bet you already knew my last name..."

Thea reached down to scratch Venus's neck. "They really do make for great companions." You'd think someone this excited to see a cat might have owned one at some point. Maybe he's forgotten. The cat's ears swiveled left, picking up some strange and distant sound.

"What's that mean? Is she scared, or..." -- Ricardo gave Vincent a last wave before returning to his shop. No new customers had come between his departure and his arrival. Judas looked up, a small smile on his face. "Sure stayed there for longer than you could have, didn't you?" Ignoring his coworker, the tattoo artist sat down on his work stool, cleaning out his tattoo needle with a grin on his face.

"She's heard something. It might be nothing," she said weakly, but she knew that if you were quick to dismiss odd noises in this world, you were also quick to be killed by the creatures making those odd noises. "I'll check it out with my highly lethal stick. Unless you happen to have some great monster-killing weapons with you."

Vincent stood and watched Ricardo leave before picking up the lilies and making his way back to his worktable. He took the stem cutter and trimmed the lilies, laying them beside the carnations one by one. A few times, he looked across the street, one instance distracting him enough to cut his finger on the blade. Drops of blood spilled onto the painfully white flowers before Vincent even realized his slip-up. He raced to the bathroom in the back, stumbling over the table leg in the process. By the time he got a bandage and made his way back to the main room, his cat had somehow made his way up onto the table and was laying on top of the flowers in a patch of sunlight.
