Marco waved quietly before turning around, digging around his pockets for his own flashlight. God, I feel like a little kid again. I really hope nobody else shows up.

Luca wrinkled her nose up, glancing down at her wrist to check the time. It was getting late. She glanced around the cavern, wondering if there was some protocol she had to follow before leaving to go home. No. The chickens are fed, the turkeys are fed, and if your employers want anything else, they will bring it up with you tomorrow.

Marco shoved one hand in his pocket, the other holding the flashlight ahead of him. A thin, tinny beam of light swept the dark and dusty terrain of the cavern as he walked on, glancing every so often behind him. Eli's father had left with him, so he was alone now... still, the feeling of watchful eyes was too familiar to Marco, and sneaking suspicions began to prod at his mind, each more fantastical than the one previous.

She headed towards the exit, once again lamenting the fact that she hadn't brought her torch. Well honestly, how were you to know that the lights wouldn't be working? Nevertheless, she wasn't fond of the dark, and the journey home was a long and quiet one.

Marco had been walking in silence when he began to hear footsteps in the cavern. He tensed, fingers tightening around the flashlight. Although he knew that it was probably just some worker heading home from a shift, they'd all been taught from a young age that spending too long underground and with so few people tended to make some a bit... prone to violence.

The door shut with a heavy screech of metal hinges, and Luca cringed. The noise echoed down the dark tunnels. She felt a strong urge to run, and stilled her feet to compose herself. What would father say if he knew you were being so foolish? Lost in thought, she hadn't noticed the faint light up ahead.

Marco stopped in his tracks, a shudder running down his spine as the noise of a door echoed down the cavern walls. It was only now that he had begun to realize just how dim his flashlight really was, in the crushing darkness of the huge cave. He couldn't kid himself anymore; there was definitely someone here, and now he could only wonder whether he'd see the ghost first or the living.

It was another few moments before Luca moved again, and as soon as she did, her mind had cleared enough for her to register the fact that she wasn't alone in the darkness. A beam of light passed over the wall beside her and she stiffened. Someone's there. Is it Elias?

Marco moved the flashlight around, seeing something move in the dark. Pearly figures were beginning to register in his eyesight, disappearing under the thin beam of light. Two of them, one male and one female, standing beside the other person in the cave. They stared at him silently, though their eyes seemed less harsh than those of Eli's father. They seemed familiar, and he realized that he had seen them shortly before. His rapid heart rate began to slow as he lowered the flashlight. "Oh. It's just you."

She huffed. It was the rude boy from before - Elias' friend. Well, it could be much worse at this time of night. You should be glad he's not a complete stranger. "What are you doing here?" Luca demanded, voice coming out cooler than she'd intended.

"Going to my work shift, maybe?" Marco snorted, noting her frosty tone. "Believe it or not, I have a job just like you do."

She faltered at that. He didn't seem like the type of person to be feeding chickens, and she toyed with the idea of asking him what his job was. "Do you have a spare torch?" She asked at last, resentful of the blow to her pride.

Marco considered for a moment, letting his eyes slip towards the man and woman standing behind her. He rummaged around in his jacket pocket, pulling out his spare flashlight and handing it to her. "I'm sorry for your loss, by the way. I know how hard it can be."

She froze, fingers tightening around the torch he had just given her. The cavern suddenly seemed far too quiet - too still. Had she heard him correctly? "What did you just say?"

"I'm sorry for your loss," He repeated quietly, staring her directly in the eye. "I know what it feels like. I hope you're doing well since then."

"I don't know what you're talking about," she returned, voice equally quiet. She could detect a slight tremor in it, which would usually irritate her. Now, however, she was too preoccupied with how he knew. He was talking, of course, about her parents. Perhaps he had heard from hearsay. The population, whilst still quite large, was limited, and whilst her family had kept to themselves, she supposed that idle gossip might have informed him.

Marco raised an eyebrow. Denial. That's a new one. "Whatever you say. I have to get to work."

She didn't speak, just chewed on her lower lip and started walking again. There was an uneasy feeling in her stomach, and the hairs on the back of her neck were standing up. Luca's fingers were still gripping the torch, and she managed to loosen her hold in order to turn it on - she was glad of its light, especially with Marco's words still ringing in her head. I'm sorry for your loss.

Marco glanced behind him for a moment, watching the pearly figures by Luca. The mother looked so strained, so full of sorrow; he guessed her death was at least a few years ago. The father, on the other hand, looked a bit more relieved, if extremely guilty as he stared at his daughter. Probably died after the mother. Marco tilted his head, wondering what their story was. Perhaps he could try communing with them, if only he knew enough about them to try drawing them away from the girl.

Eli strolled the dimly-lit corridor, glancing through an inset window at the main cavern every so often. It was only once in a blue moon that he got a break in the middle of the workday. He might as well do something. He took a right into a tunnel that sloped downwards and looped around, leading to the main cavern that was the center of the cave system. Elias didn't have anything particular in mind. He rarely strayed into the relative hustle and bustle of the city center, but it was better than doing nothing. Maybe he'd go to the little park nestled between those two government buildings.
