It's been fifteen years or so since the sun disappeared. In fact, today might be the anniversary of its death. I can't be sure. But time doesn't matter so much now. Iceland is nice, but I wish I could go other places. I hear there are other colonies scattered across the globe, but we're pretty isolated here. The only time I can recall us ever hearing from a person far away was a year or so ago, from somebody in Yellowstone. The scrap of paper was the highlight of everyone's week. I wish I could go visit them. The tunnels get boring after a while when all you have to look at is rock. The surface is a strange place, but it's all I've really known, I guess. I barely remember a time when the entire Earth was green and wet. At least the hot springs are interesting. Still, it makes me wonder why we even bother trying to keep surviving. What's the point of living when all you have to look forward to is another day of work and worry?
__________________ Since the Earth was flung into space with the disappearance of its star, life's been hard for humans. A fraction of survivors have managed to set up crude underground cities in places with high levels of geothermal activity like Yellowstone, Iceland, Kamchatka, and Japan. The cities are generally comprised of large manmade caverns with connecting tunnels, heated and powered by nuclear energy and the geothermal activity. Most species have died off, save for the ones domesticated by humans and a few others. On the surface, it's cold enough that the very atmosphere has frozen and fallen to the ground as snow. Frozen oxygen must be gathered from the outside by people in special suits and re-heated, since the plants in the agriculture caves don't produce enough the sustain the city. The surface is a dark, otherworldly place of snowy water, gases, and liquid helium. Lighted only by the stars of the Milky Way, it can be a frightening place. Current global population: approximately 7,500 Largest city: Iceland, with a population of 2,000 Other cities are located in Yellowstone, Kamchatka, Japan, New Zealand's North Island, Africa, China, and Chile, with the last three being the smallest and most isolated. Inspired in part by Fritz Leiber's short story, A Pail of Air. www.baenebooks.com/chapters/0743498747/0743498747___6.htm__________________ Note: I have put this roleplay in the realistic category because it is technically science fiction despite the fact that this has no chance of ever happening, as well as the simpler reason that there are already many roleplays in the Fantasy category. Name: Elias Neguse Age: 18 Location: Yellowstone Appearance: Dark skin with short black hair and dark eyes. Simple work clothes. 6' 3" Personality: Usually bright and bubbly, he often jokes around, trying to lighten the mood. This doesn't exactly set him on good terms with his peers and coworkers, most of whom believe he should spend more time and energy working. He's very prone to restlessness and wishes to escape the underground city, even if he knows it's practically a death sentence. Other: His family is originally from Ethiopia, but his grandparents moved to America with his parents before the incident. His father was one of the first to explore the surface after the underground city had been constructed. Unfortunately, his suit failed, leaving him to instantly freeze. Olan works as a caretaker of the few livestock that currently reside in the city.

(This is a really cool idea!)
Name: Luca (pronounced loo-tsa) Kovačević Age: 17 Appearance: Luca is relatively tall, standing at 5' 7", and has a curvaceous build. She has fair skin and dark eyes, with long, bushy brown hair. Her facial features are angular; she has a thin, straight nose and prominent brows, chin and cheekbones. Location: Yellowstone Personality: She's quite subdued and serious, recognising that there is a time and a place for joking around. It is therefore nearly impossible for her to relax. She has a strong sense of duty, and is an inherently logical and straightforward-thinking individual. Whilst she has no difficulty expressing herself in social situations, Luca tends to be out of touch with her own emotions, and indeed the emotions of the people around her. ISTJ. Other: Luca was born in Dubrovnik, Croatia, to a working class couple. The small family was hit hard by an economic recession when she was seven months old, and subsequently moved to Germany to seek better work. When the sun disappeared, Luca was on holiday in Yellowstone with her parents. The family was Jewish, but since renounced their faith and Luca remembers very little of what it was like to be a believer. Her mother died of heart failure when Luca was fifteen, and her father struggled with the reality of their situation, ultimately committing suicide the next year. She therefore lives with her then-neighbours.

(Thank you!)
Eli wiped sweat from his brow as he cleared out the horse stall before him, shoveling dung and soiled hay. It was always hot in this cavern. It was one of the closest to a geyser and it was where the coffee, pineapples, and bananas grew. He would've minded the work if it weren't for the animals. He knew them and they knew him. After putting in fresh bedding and leading the chestnut mare back inside, he leaned against the stall door to watch the few workers amongst the rows of plants.

Name: Marco Antonio Rivera (Prefers to just be referred to as Marco, Antonio, or Rivera) Age: 19 Appearance: Marco Antonio isn't very tall for his age, standing at 5'6''. His skin is medium tone and his hair is very thick, straight, and dark. His eyes are dark brown, almost black. Location: Yellowstone Personality: Careful with expressing his thoughts and feelings, but not timid; rather, he simply chooses to remain silent until the right situation presents itself. His sense of humor is dry, biting, sarcastic, and often rather morbid. Although intuitive and receptive to the body language and emotions of others, Marco Antonio often acts in a manner that lacks sensitivity towards the feelings of his peers. He entirely lacks the ability to care about the opinions of others. Other: Marco Antonio was born in a small town near Campeche to two Mexican parents: One from a long line of Spanish immigrants, the other from a completely indigenous family. They sought a better life in the United States and settled there before Marco's father abandoned his wife and two-year-old son. Marco and his mother lived in one of the underground cities where she began work as a biochemist. When the son disappeared, mother and son were well-prepared. Josefina Rivera is his only link to the culture that Marco never could grow up in and his only caretaker. She is also one of the few, if the only one, who believes Marco Antonio when he says that he can see the dead.

Marco sat in his bedroom in silence, staring out of the tiny window to the rest of the city. It was too early in the morning for many lights to be on, including his own; but the tinny white lamps that lit up the workers were enough to allow him some vantage of the world beyond the small pane of glass. He knew that waking up this early was a bad idea, as he would have to get ready for his own work shift in just a few hours. He had been an idiot for forgetting to close the curtains to block the light that he knew would be there. And yet, he had a sneaking suspicion that perhaps it hadn't been the lights that had interrupted his dreams. Something cold and unsettling was already prickling at the back of his neck. A presence, behind him. Silent, just as he was. Marco dared not turn around, mrely staring stiffly out the window. He never turned around nowadays. Not anymore. "Go away."

Eli turned to give the mare's nose a few last strokes before he made his way to the exit tunnel, waving at the harvesters as he passed. Most of the tunnels were usually pretty dark, but since this one was more remote, electric lights only dotted the wall every few meters. There were some stretches where it was pitch black, leaving Eli only in the company of his thoughts and the faint hum of the nuclear power plant below the city. Eventually, the tunnel connected to a larger one, which led to the city's center cavern. He glanced out through the porthole windows in the rock at the huge space. The tunnel he was in lie in the wall of the city center, about halfway to the ceiling, which allowed him a nice view. Across the way, he could see the windows of the tunnel on the other side, where the dorms were. Eli headed that way, towards another connecting passageway that led to the chicken coops. As he walked, he tried to recall what it was like on Earth before this way of life, something he did nearly every day. But no matter how much he racked his brains, he could only come up with a few vague memories. After all, he'd only been three years old when everything had changed.

Marco closed his eyes, voice coming out in a whisper more shaky and hesitant that he had hoped. "You heard me. Go away." Another moment passed, and he could still feel eyes boring into the back of his neck. Then, it was gone. He would be back though, very soon. This one never seemed to leave him alone. Marco occupied himself with staring at the tiny figures moving around outside. At the wall of the city's heart, the small blue light indicating a shift change was just barely visible through the glass windows. Eli should either be getting out or going in around now. I can't really remember.

Elias rolled down his sleeves to his elbows. Thankfully, the chicken coops were a bit cooler, though noisy and smelly. If it weren't for the hens, this would probably be one of his least favorite jobs. He skirted the dorms on his way to the tunnel. These ones were relatively new, built a few years after the original ones. They were nicer than all the rest and had forced Eli to take a different route to the chickens. It was quite a long detour, but he tried not to mind so much. It wasn't worth complaining about anything around here. You'd just be ignored and told to work harder.

The tunnel in question was dark; Luca was certain the lights were malfunctioning. Perhaps a wire's come loose or something. She stopped to glance around, a little self conscious as she realised that she could only see about five metres either side of her. Anybody could be following and she wouldn't know, provided they were quiet. Having said that, she wasn't entirely sure where her turning was. The absence of light had thrown her sense of direction completely out of kilter, and the feeling of being watched wasn't helping in the slightest. Squinting, Luca could just about make out a bluish light ahead, and a few steps later she could be certain that it wasn't just a trick of the darkness. I don't recognise that. I must have missed the right turn.

As Eli made his way through the tunnel, in his hand swung the portable lamp he always brought along for when he used the largely unlit passages. But this one was fairly widely-used by many of the citizens... He'd have to talk to somebody about this later, if they weren't already trying to fix the problem. The lamplight only allowed Eli to see a little ways in front of him, which just made the darkness seem thicker. This was a near-daily occurrence for him, and he thought it should be something he was accustomed to by now,but he still feared the dark. Often, the memory of seeing the corpses on the surface, frozen solid and still horrifyingly lifelike, would jump into his head. It left Eli shaken and made him walk faster.

It was a little colder than usual, and Luca tugged her jacket closer to her. The material was thick, but did little to prevent the cold air from slipping down her neck to settle against the bare skin there. The simple movement occupied her for a second, so she didn't notice as the light grew closer. In fact, she only realised that someone was heading in her direction once she heard their footfall echo along with hers, just a moment out of sync. She felt her heart beat a little faster in her chest, and lowered her head in the hope of being ignored. Generally, Luca found that was the best way to get along in their environment. Keeping herself safe was something she could manage. Other people... Well, other people were trickier.

The sound of someone else's footsteps caused Eli to tense, even though he knew it was probably just someone on their way to work. The steps sounded lighter and softer than his own, almost inhuman if he let his imagination get the better of him. He tried to think of the awkward relief he'd feel upon seeing the other person and realizing there had been nothing to be afraid of. But when the light finally fell upon the source of the footsteps, Eli jumped and his hand flew to his chest in surprise. The figure was cast in the bluish-white of the lamp, which reminded him even more of the frozen people in the abandoned buildings up above.

Luca kept her gaze trained on the ground before her as she walked, determined to keep to herself and avoid any menial interaction with the other person. As they drew nearer, she raised a hand to shield her eyes from the harsh light; it left puddling white spots in her vision, and she had to blink several times to clear them. A sudden movement of the second person made her jump. The light was too bright to detect what they had done exactly, but the sound alone was enough to make the blood rush to her ears. A little ashamed of herself for being so easily scared, she swallowed and carried on walking. Perhaps I should ask them for directions.

Eli stared at the girl, slowly coming to the realization that she was indeed just another citizen. "Oh..." He allowed his heart rate and breathing to slow a bit before he continued forwards. He tried to remember whether or not he'd seen this girl before. Somehow, she seemed vaguely familiar even after he'd come to the conclusion that they hadn't crossed paths before. Eli offered a wide smile as she approached, hoping she hadn't noticed him scared out of his wits a minute ago. "Good morning, Miss," he greeted politely in a heavy Ethiopian accent.

Luca tried to make out his features through the light the lamp was emitting, but it took a while for her eyes to adjust. By the time he'd finished speaking, she'd managed to ascertain that his eyes were a similar colour to hers. His hair and skin, however, were much darker. She was sure she'd never seen him before. "Morning," she replied quickly, her own accent a curious inherited mix of Croatian and Austro-Bavarian. The result was a rather clipped tone of voice, not wholly unpleasant but definitely foreign. It was something she had become horribly conscious of since growing up.

"You sound lost," Elias noted. He never saw too many people this far down the tunnel. Most entered from one of the more frequently-used connecting passageways, which he'd passed a while ago. Most people who bothered to go down this far were people that helped tend to the chickens and turkeys. "Are you lost?"

"Yes," she nodded, hoping her embarrassment wouldn't show on her face. "I need to get to the agriculture caves. I think I took a wrong turn somewhere - it's my first day." Strictly speaking, she had been in a job for some weeks. However, her father had killed himself just as she heard back from her employers, and she had been granted compassionate leave for as long as she wanted. Sort of. In their current situation, it was a given that she would have to return sooner rather than later. And privately she was glad of the distraction.

"Which one?" he asked simply. There were five in total, each growing different crops and housing a variety of animals. A sixth cave, smaller than the rest, was reserved for the poultry. "I'm heading to feed the chickens and clean their coops, myself. If that's where you're headed, you're going completely the wrong way," he informed Luca, giving her another smile. He'd had to give directions before, but usually to younger children who got lost while playing. It was unusual to see someone older get themselves turned around.
