"We are not supposed to give the chickens names," he chuckled, leaning in a bit as if he were telling a secret, "But I have named this one Mary. I can tell who she is because she has some black feathers on her chest here. See?" Elias pointed to the feathers in question, smiling eagerly.

Marco trudged on, smiling to himself as he wondered about Eli's whereabouts. Who knows? Maybe he's obsessing over his chickens again. Guy won't shut up about them usually. He shoved his hands into his pockets, whistling a soft tune into the still, chilled air. Not that he had even heard music in a long while; the old musical records were now strictly reserved for historical research and preservation-- something about keeping later generations with some sort of memory of a life before the caves. All of the instruments had died with the sun as well, and so had all the musicians. But this was a lullaby that his mother used to sing to him, back when they walked the surface, and he knew it like he knew his own body. I guess some music was never meant to die.

Luca snorted softly. "Of course you have," she muttered, her tone much less scathing than her expression. "Hello, Mary." You're talking to a chicken, her internal monologue scolded her, and she mentally kicked herself. You should be working. And so she should be. "What else can I do?" She asked.

Eli set the hen down, thinking for a moment. "You could feed the turkeys. That would be helpful," he said. "I am nearly finished collecting eggs and cleaning the coops, so by the time you are finished, I will be too." He made his way back through the chickens, who were starting to disperse, pointing to the far side of the cave. "They are over there. And do not worry, the turkeys are friendly too."

Luca gritted her teeth as he mentioned turkeys. Great. They weren't nearly as sweet-looking as the chickens were, and the way they moved was somewhat horrifying to her. Regardless, she picked up the feed again and made her way carefully towards the other side of the cave. She couldn't help but notice that the smell was worse that side, and focused on breathing through her lips rather than her nose.

Eli finished up with the last chicken coop quickly, heading towards the couple turkey pens. These ones thankfully didn't require much maintenance as there was no real bedding, just grass. He carried with him two baskets of eggs that were to be delivered to the kitchens later on. "The turkeys..." Eli said as he passed by Luca to refill the birds' water, "They look scary, and sometimes they are loud. They take longer than chickens to get used to you." Carefully, he refilled the tub that fed the watering system, continuing once he was finished. "But if you work here for a while, they will love you just as much and will prove themselves just as friendly."

Luca let out a noncommittal noise, watching the turkeys eat from a few steps away. One edged towards her, and she tried to shuffle away from it as subtly as possible, pretending to adjust her trouser leg to justify the movement. "They are just birds," she said, shrugging as though she was completely unfazed by them. "I knew what I would be dealing with when I applied for the job."

"Alright, well... I must take these to the kitchens," Eli told Luca, picking up the baskets of eggs. "You can tag along, if you like. The kitchens are certainly fun to visit. Otherwise, I will see you tomorrow."

She was curious, if she was completely honest, and this boy had been nice to her so far. But she shook her head, clasping her hands together in front of her body. "No. Thank you, but I should get back."

Eli nodded, giving her one last smile. "I understand. Goodbye then, Miss Luca!" he said, raising one of the egg baskets in a farewell. He headed to the exit, turning to push the button that opened it with his hip. As he began his trip to the kitchens, he realized he wouldn't exactly be able to carry his lantern, so Eli took to whistling a simple tune to keep him company in the darkness.

"Goodbye," she said simply as he turned away. A frown creased her brow; she wasn't used to people having such a cheery disposition, but then she preferred by to associate with people as a general rule. Often they found her accent too odd, or her attitude too distant. She was suddenly aware of how alone she was in the room, and the sound of hundreds of fowl clucking in unison was fairly unsettling, so she rolled up the edge of the bag of feed and made her way across the cavern to store it. There. That wasn't so bad, was it?

Marco popped in from the back entrance just as Eli left. He frowned, staring around the small cave. Chickens, turkeys, some girl he hadn't seen before... no sign of the Nigerian. He certainly hadn't been prepared for the smell, and it made his eyes water. Still, the Mexican remained at the door, as much as his nostrils complained. "Hey, you," he told the girl, leaning against the doorframe. "You seen a guy working around here? Tall, dark skin, speaks with kind of an accent."

After a while of walking in the dark, doubt started poking at Eli's conscience. The Ethiopian stopped and took a moment to look around, which didn't do much, as he couldn't really see anything. He leaned against the wall, which he'd been using to guide himself. It hadn't ended in a while. There should've been a break where a corner was; a tunnel connecting with the one he was in now. Maybe he'd just been walking slower than usual and it was just up ahead, but the dreadful confusion that was starting to fill him told him otherwise.

Luca cast a critical eye over the newcomer, rolling up her sleeves as he spoke. He was about her height, perhaps a little shorter although he looked older than her. "Wide-eyed, excited as a small child," she continued his list, counting the items off on her fingers. "You have just missed him. I think he said he was going to the kitchen. Are you a friend of his?"

"Yeah," Marco sighed, scratching at his stubble. He stared at her, refusing to let his eyes slip towards the shady figures that he could see behind her. "If he were going to the kitchens, he'd be going out this way... Don't tell me the idiot got himself lost again."

She shrugged, watching his hand. "He seems like... how do you say it, faliti po dvije daske." As usual, her mother tongue came easier to her; she had yet to grasp most of the English idioms, although away with the fairies was possibly the most comparable of those she did know. She was confused about the context, in any case.

Marco was already making his way across the room, waving his hand. "Don't know what that means, don't really care either. See you around, probably."

Luca frowned, affronted. "It was nice meeting you too, sir," she said with a mock bow. As she watched him leave, she felt herself hoping that he didn't work anywhere near her; he seemed like the sort of unpleasant person she would be best avoiding.

Marco ignored the lady's words as he pushed the door open. She seemed way too pretentious to spend more than a full minute speaking to. He had half a mind to turn around and tell her so, but right now, he had to find Eli before he managed to end up in a different cave system entirely. He peered into the darkness, trying to listen for footsteps or muttering.

By now, Eli had started to use his nose to guide himself. Mostly, the tunnels smelled like dirt and sometimes wetness, but as he kept walking, he caught a whiff of something that smelled more like food being cooked. He still wasn't entirely sure where it was coming from precisely, but turning left seemed like the best bet.
