Ricardo touched down, shifting back into a human form. He had been high up enough to see some sort of beat with Vincent. His was was already clenched tight in his fist. A twinge of fear had already begun forming in the pit of his chest, tightening his breathing.

A human! The creature snarled, the bristles on its back standing on end. It probably wanted to steal this other human back. No matter. This wouldn't be much of a challenge anyway.

"Get out of here. Go away before I curse you."
"I think you'd better save whatever magic you've got left." The beginnings of a commotion sounded behind her. "They're coming for you."
The witch stared at her blankly. "Venus is already gone, what more can anyone do? Oh, I forgot, you wouldn't understand. What was that goldfish's name supposed to be again?"
She ignored Thea's last remark. "They don't have much use for a witch without her familiar. Especially your kind of witch."
"No one does. That's why they all end up dead."
"Now you're getting it." The girl moved to the side, and all the casters of the underground swarmed into the alley- friends, enemies, casters the witch had not yet met. They stood silently, watching.

This time, the creature stayed still. However, its now-stiff legs blocked Vincent off like a cage. By now, the others had heard the commotion and a few poked their heads out to look. Upon seeing a respected peer stunned and frozen, many bursted from their hiding spaces, swarming the forest around Ricardo.

XXXI.
Ricardo's breathing grew more frantic. It wasn't really the animals or Vincent being in danger that scared him. It was more the temptation that was beginning to take hold of him as he grew more frustrated. He gritted his teeth, and the voice that ripped from his throat hardly sounded like his own. He didn't care if the animals could understand his words, but he knew that a threatening tone would get the message through. "You have three seconds before I lose it. Three. Seconds."

"What've you done to them?" the witch asked warily, holding Venus a little closer.
"I doubted you'd want a slow death." The population of the underground surged forwards, engulfing Thea and Venus.
"How are you doing this? You're not even magic," Thea shouted as the crowd overtook them.
"Hmm… you got more upset over that cat than you ever did over me. Things like this are why we didn't work out, T," the girl said absently, refusing to meet the witch's eye any longer.
Curses flew through the air, the crowd ran and trampled anything in their path. Thea dropped to the ground, hugging Venus to her chest, and squeezed her eyes shut. And she was met, again, with silence.

The instinct and drive to protect their home and their food overtook the beasts and Ricardo's yelling only made them angrier. They swarmed like wasps, jumping up and piling over each other trying to get close to Ricardo. The ones closest to him butted their horned heads against his legs and waist.

Without hesitation, Ricardo pointed his wand at the nearest animal, the surrounding forest starting to disappear in a haze of scarlet. "Crucio!"

Tessa was falling fast through the darkness. She had hit terminal velocity within seconds, and for once she was glad of her lack of hair. She felt strangely calm in the darkness, and the falling didn't worry her much. What terrified her was what would happen when she finally landed.
There was a sudden rush of cold around her, and she felt a great pressure in her ears. She couldn't breathe... It took her just seconds to realise that she had landed in water. Panicking now, she pushed her arms back and kicked, trying to propel herself upwards.

The poor animal fell to the forest floor, writhing in pain. Its cries of distress were enough to frighten the rest of them into slowing their attack, but they were relentless still. In the madness, the stunned creature broke free of the spell, using the boy's distraction to dig at the burrow entrance and make it wider. Silently, it grabbed a mouthful of Vincent's robes and dragged him underground.

Kicking a few of his attackers aside, Ricardo ran after the beast that had taken Vincent. His distress had already begun to twist his body in a strange combination of human and crow. His nails became shiny black talons, eyes the piercing scarlet of a bird, a half-formed wing trailing on his back. "Avada Kedavra!"

A muffled squeal sounded from the earthen hole. In the dark of the tunnel, another bristly creature took over the duty of its dead peer, towing Vincent deeper into the network of burrows.

Ricardo ran faster, wand pointed in front of him. Still, it was becoming difficult to aim for a point that wasn't near Vincent. "Sectumsempra!"

The beast yelped as blood spattered the dirt walls, but it limped on until it couldn't anymore. Another took up the duty of dragging the food, scampering quickly into a black, gaping hole, through which it disappeared.

The witch opened her eyes to utter darkness. Casting a light spell, she noticed she was no longer holding Venus- she allowed herself to think that maybe that had been an illusion, too. But still something felt off within her.
The illumination spell didn't do much. She could see her hands and a little bit of the ground, but nothing beyond that.

The slightly smaller animal managed to escape these and deliver Vincent. The place the Gryffindor had been set down was enormous, a large cavern deep beneath the surface. The space was pitch-black, the animals guided by scent. As soon as the hog-like creature had brought in the precious cargo, snuffling and snorting could be heard. It had been so long since they'd eaten... Drawn to the cavern by the smell of food, more of them soon arrived, taking turns mouthing and biting at Vincent and his clothing.
