XXIII.
Jack stumbled back as the other figures on the stage began to gain more substance. The crowd seemed to shift and change, going from members of his school and team to people in long, heavy cloaks and hats. Their clothing would have been rather funny, had Jack not been scared out of his wits.

"I dunno, like chocolate or summat." The Tessa in the bed spoke again, and then laughed. The sound was terrible. "Funny."
The surgeon at the head of the bed looked up, and from her position above, Tessa could make out the panic in her eyes as she spoke to the anaesthetist. "Okay, possible complex partial seizure. Can happen in the mapping procedure. Let's get her back under, quickly please."
The Tessa in the bed relaxed visibly as more drugs were pumped into her system. Her eyes flickered closed. And then everything went black again.

Leo was distracted now. He focused on one of the figures, and then the next. Neither had much substance. The boy wished again that his legs would budge, but the audience continued to murmur and the sound was swamping his senses. It was all too much. He let out a cry, the sound strangled by the reluctance in his throat. I wish someone was here. Ricardo, Bianca, anybody. But he was alone on the stage, save for the two vaguely flickering figures. And somehow he didn't want to know who they were.

Vincent tried to hold back his sobs when he couldn't find any signs of life. This had to be fake. Some kind of sick joke, perhaps. Ricardo couldn't be gone. But he was... Vincent bent over Ricardo, finally letting sobs rack his body. "I'm sorry..." he gasped. Hot tears ran down his cheeks, falling onto Ricardo's shirt with a sort of definite air, as if this was what confirmed his death. "I-I'm sorry," he said again. "I love you... And I hope you can forgive me."

Tessa couldn't tell how long it had been since the lights below her had gone off. She was suspended in the darkness all the while, and nothing happened at all. Her heart still raced inside her chest at the scene that had played out. She knew it so well by now - nightmare after nightmare meant that she never really forgot it. And even though it never had happened, she couldn't help but feel like it was real.
The lights came back on again, and Tessa let out a sob.

XXIV.
Jack closed his eyes tightly, feeling everything shift under his feet, and all at once, he was somewhere new. The audience had become a crowd of men and women in cloaks, staring at the other boy on the stage expectantly. The boy was in a cloak as well, and was completely unfamiliar. Jack struggled to a stand, cane cold and strangely unfamiliar in his shaking hand.

That was when the room started flickering, and when Philip became scared out of his wits for the hundredth time today. The audience shifted, some laughing, others just staring. The ghosts nexf to him became more tangible every second and Philip was conflicted as to whether he should be afraid of the people, or of those

"Unfortunately now that we're in, it looks like we won't be able to remove as much as we'd hoped," the surgeon was saying as she glanced over the monitor, brow furrowed as she returned to the pipette of water. Tessa watched in abject horror, lips parted as if she would say something. No sound came out.
"Just remove as much as possible." Came another voice, and Tessa switched her attention to another figure. He was watching, arms folded around a clipboard. "We want to ensure the best outcome possible."

XXV.
Ricardo was now running through the Forbidden Forest, breathing hard. They're in danger, I have to find them, they're in danger, they're in danger, danger... The repetition of the thought made it difficult to think about anything else as he tore past trees. He couldn't remember how he knew that his friends were here, but he knew, and that was hardly something to think about at the moment.

A split second later, Philip found himself in a strange auditorium-like room. Not the same one he was just in. The people in the crowd were dressed strangely, like he'd gone back in time. They looked like people from a fairytale with their hats. Like witches or something.

There was silence for a few moment, and then the machine by the bed let out a low bleep. Tessa felt her heart constrict in her rib cage, threatening to burst free.
"Okay, she's tachycardic. We've got a small bleed here." The neurosurgeon sounded panicked, but kept her movements carefully controlled as she reached again for the pipette.
"Bleed?" The man with the clipboard sounded alarmed. "Sort it out!"
"Let's lower her bp."

Vincent was unconscious. The thing that was dragging him through the undergrowth grunted and snorted with the effort. It took a moment to drop the boy and lef out a blood-curdling scream before continuing on its way with Vincent in tow.

Tessa could do nothing but watch. Despite her terror, she found herself watching her vital signs. The little green line moved up and down in a reassuring rhythm, albeit slowly. In the operating theatre, things were far less relaxed.
The bleeps sounded again, higher and at more frequent intervals. "Bleed not stopping," the neurosurgeon reported, indicating for a nurse to step forwards and mop her brow for her. "Not good. The brain is swelling. Sort the pressure out; I need to remove more."

XXVI.
Ricardo gritted his teeth. He had no time to comb the entire forest on foot. Quickly, he shifted into his form as a crow, taking to the skies and flitting over the trees. He searched for something, anything of his friends. Vincent's familiar red hair, Leo's jacket, a purple flash of Tessa's wig, Bianca's outfit, Giovanni's bag, anything to give him a sign of his family.

There was silence, except for the bleeps. The neurosurgeon's hand stilled, and she placed a section of the tumour carefully into a dish before laying down the surgical instrument she was holding. "Check her pupils," she said softly, tone full of defeat. Tessa wanted to scream.
"What?"
"Check her pupils," she repeated again, slower. "Please."

When the creature reached its destination, it was met by more of its kind, the small mob snuffling their comrade and this boy that it brought. In unision, they raised their blocky heads to the canopy and let loose another scream, one of celebration. The one that had found Vincent tried to drag him beneath the earth into a burrow, but it was too tight of a fit. The creature huffed in frustration, forced to leave the treasure outside.

One of the nurses made his way slowly around the bed, stopping as he reached his patient's head. Ever so carefully, he reached across her face and gently lifted an eyelid with his gloved finger. Her vacant gaze stared past him, unmoving.
"Pupils fixed and dilated," the nurse breathed, shaking his head and withdrawing his hand. Tessa's eye fell shut again. "She's gone."

The crow heard the loud sound, a surprised sort of caw sounding from his beak. There! He soared towards the sound, heart beating hard in a tiny chest. Oh, god, I hope I'm not too late...

One of the animals looked up at the approaching crow, alerting the rest with a few short barks. As quickly as they had appeared, the rest of the band slipped into their burrows, the one who'd brought the precious food staying aboveground to see what this crow wanted.

The scene went dark again. Tessa blinked hard, trying to wake herself up from what was so obviously a nightmare. But she remained there, floating in the darkness. She sobbed, raising one hand to muffle the sound. The realisation that she could again move hit her just as gravity did. And then she fell.
