The ringing grew louder and louder in Philip's ears, sending vibrations through his whole body with each occurrence. Soon, the sound drowned out everything else. It blurred his vision. He was panicking. Hyperventilating. Something unearthly was at work here. Something supernatural. Philip collapsed to the ground and sobbed silently. Memories of his childhood came flashing back of asking his mom to check the closet every night, and when he got older, simply having small panic attacks in his tiny, pitch-black room. Eventually, the ringing filled his mind too, until the maze of streets around him went black.
The next thing he knew, it was bright and sunny and someone was talking to him. Philip blinked, dazed. He recognized this place.

Jack trembled as the auditorium exploded into laughter. Laughter at the hideous scarlet patches and lumps of scar tissue that spread across his chest and legs, laughter at the oddly-shaped stump at his leg that ended in a primitive-looking metal contraption, laughter at the fully exposed one just below his shoulder. And at the front row, there they were. His team, laughing the loudest.

Vincent sat in the library, flipping through his textbook. Cramming for finals was really taking a toll on him, both physically and mentally. He'd hardly gotten any sleep all week and hadn't had much time to eat either.

Ricardo found himself in the halls, walking silently though the school. Maybe it was better to just find Vincent, instead of waiting around for him. Make this entire ordeal faster. Before long, he found himself in the library, almost frozen with nerves and fear. And perhaps, as well, a little shame-- what if this ruined their friendship? What if Vincent never talked to him again? What if Vincent had someone else?

Leo stood by himself. It was a vast space, and completely darkened. He felt as though a cloth was pressing over his eyes, so oppressive was the blackness. He felt somewhat reassured by it, but a small part of him quivered with the notion that he could be anywhere. He felt no walls, just the solid floor beneath his feet.
A harsh light appeared out of nowhere, shining out of the darkness and for the briefest of seconds. Then, as his eyes adjusted he could begin to establish where exactly he was. A fuzzy shape spread across the expanse before him. The light came from far above it, cutting through the blackness like a knife. As it travelled it reflected, and he suddenly knew where he was. The breath caught in his throat.

The person asked the question again, more forcefully this time. Philip looked down in bewilderment. It was a student. At least, the person looked like a student. Was this his school? By now, the other person was yelling at him. "Hey! Dumbass! What are you, deaf?"
Philip's expression changed to one of concern and anger. He gave the person a quick shake of the head and hurried away, face burning, down the still-unfamiliar hallways.

The witch visualized a door as she ran, hoping for a way out- and to her surprise, the magic worked, though her charms had failed earlier. She dashed through the door, slamming it behind her, and grinned. Whatever trap or illusion that had been, it had been easy to get out of. Her smile froze on her face as she caught a metallic scent. She turned around slowly, squinting in the dim light, and caught sight of its source. No.

Vincent closed the book with a sigh. He should take a break. The Gryffindor stood, looking back at his studying area apprehensively. No, he'd done enough for now. He needed to talk to Ricardo anyway.

IX. Jack
It was then that Jack began to cry. He certainly hand't meant to; his surprise led him to make a rather embarrassing noise through the hiccups and tears. Tears flowed freely down his face, only making the crowd laugh harder and louder. Every individual giggle or snort was like a bullet, hurled at his body and re-opening every scar that they could see. The taste of salt water flooded his senses and wet water drops splashed on the floor of the stage. In vain, Jack tried to turn away, to spare himself the humiliation of being seen crying. The awkward movement caused him to slip, landing awkwardly splayed for all to see in the center of a burning spotlight.

Unsure of where he was going, Philip found himself in one of the main halls. All along the way, people had asked him various questions or favors, and each time, he hadn't been able to answer. He took a left and ducked into an empty-looking classroom to take refuge. What met him instead was his English class.
"Oh! Philip! You're just in time for your speech!" A few snickers arose from his classmates and Philip began to panic. He turned to the door slipped out, heart fluttering nervously.

Ricardo carefully pushed open the door to the library, hesitating once he stepped inside. Each step felt more like he was sinking in ice water.

Vincent spotted Ricardo from across the large room, raising a hand in a tired wave. "Hey!" He shuffled his feet awkwardly as he waited for Ricardo, assuming he'd seen him. He just wanted to get this over with.

Ricardo jumped, turning towards Vincent. Seeing the object of his affections did little to curb his fear, but the Gryffindor forced himself to walk over to him, wringing his hands together to keep them from shaking.

"Hey, there's um... There's something I should probably talk to you about," Vincent started, sitting down at the table again. He looked Ricardo up and down, sighing. Merlin, this was going to be hard.

"...Oh. Alright. W-what do you need to tell me?" Ricardo forced a smile, but there was a unique kind of fear forming in the pit of his stomach. Oh god, please don't tell me you hate me or you don't want to be my friend anymore please please please...

"Alright. The thing is... It's just that... I've had this suspicion for a while. Kind of a hunch. And I, um... I don't know if I'm right or not, but..." Vincent broke his gaze and paused. After a moment, he looked up again and blurted, "You fancy me, don't you?" Vincent's face burned. If his intuition had been wrong, this could ruin a lot.

"I... I..." Ricardo stared at him, wide-eyed and burning red. "I... yeah. Yeah, I do. A lot. I mean, uh, if this creeps you out... uh..." The words were coming out without any filter. His mind had basically shut off. Oh god why is this happening.

Vincent groaned softly, resting his forehead in his palm. "Dammit... I didn't want to do this," he muttered. "Ricardo, I'm sorry... I just... I don't like you the way you like me." He reached out to put a hand on his friend's shoulder, trying to perhaps make this easier for him. "I wanted to tell you sooner rather than later. I didn't want it to seem like I was leading you on."

Ricardo forced a small laugh. "Don't worry about that. It's, ah... it's not like I'm going to stop being your friend because you don't feel the same way. There's no pressure for you to. I just... hope this doesn't make things awkward." Something inside him shriveled up and died. The fear had been replaced by a plummeting sort of sadness, the pain of rejection much more raw than he had imagined. Of course Vincent didn't feel the same way. How could he ever have expected him to? It had been a crush, a silly fantasy. God, the only thing that could make this worse would be if he says he had feelings for someone else...

"No, of course not. I'm always here to be your best friend," Vincent assured him. Merlin, I hope I didn't just ruin his day. I probably have... He looked up at the sound of his name being called and could only offer a tiny smile when a brown-haired girl scampered towards their table.
"Hey, do you have the stuff?" Vincent nodded and handed her a small stack of parchment pieces, trying to avoid eye contact with her. "Thanks! See you later, then!" The girl gave him a grin before running off to the opposite side of the library. Why now, of all times?
