"They do! Which is why this case is so unique. Apparently this is a very old time turner, one that was made and sold before the Ministry released regulations on them. Probably even a relic passed down in a family, or something. Worst part is that, since the time turner that was used is a paradox relic from another timeline, it rules out trying to find the source of a stolen time turner. Assuming it was even stolen." June took a pencil, drawing a tiny arrow next to her selection. "So, a plan of action... I still need to figure that out."

"Has anyone reported seeing anything?" He questioned, tapping the menu lightly with the tip of his wand. It folded itself up and flew from the room. "Eyewitnesses would be handy. Although I suppose seeing people materialise out of nowhere is hardly unusual in our society."

"I guess so. But on the bright side, the nerds have managed to detect some of the residual energy that time travel and paradox objects release. Granted, since it's been so long since the actual event happened, it's much harder to pinpoint an exact location, but they have a general area in which it had to have happened."

"Oh? And where have they narrowed it down to?" He stood as he spoke, heading through to the kitchen to make them both a drink.

"A pretty neat circle around the Hogsmeade area. It encompasses the school, too. Makes me wonder if it was just some teenagers messing with the timeline, but then again... what kind of teenager gets their hands on a vintage time turner very easily? And why would they?"

"Have you looked into the teachers?" He mused, bringing two mugs back into the room and setting one down before her. "Perhaps one of them have dabbled before. It might be prudent to look into their histories."

"We will be doing some sweeps and interviews with the Professors tomorrow. I've already sent Lyra word so she doesn't get a huge shock. But whoever's time traveling... they're putting a lot on the line here. It's illegal and punishable by years, if not a life sentence, in Azkaban for a reason."

Will huffed. "What's the bet it's that dodgy old Arithmancy professor that taught us? He looks just like the type, you know. And he never let anyone go near his drawer." He remembered being landed in detention with him on more than one occasion, and te memory still left a bitter taste in his mouth.

"But why would he do it? What would be the appeal? A man with so many Ministry connections, he must have known that risking it would land him in a cell. Besides..." June shuddered. "The ripples of timelines and paradoxes are a lot farther reaching than most might believe."

"Oh come on, you must have been tempted to fiddle with time before," he said, a knowing look on his face. "An embarrassing moment that you wish you'd bypassed? An argument that you didn't mean? The temptation is always there."

"But at what cost? Will, a time turner is not a toy. When you change the timeline and attempt to exist in the new one... there are consequences. The energy from the paradox of time travel itself causes all sorts of damage that never would have happened normally. Accidents. Disasters...." she paused, giving WIll a knowing glance. "The death of someone who was supposed to raise her baby."

There was a tap at the window and Will sighed, rising from his seat to open it. Two pizza boxes flew in. "I know, I know. All I'm saying is that if you're looking for a motive, you shouldn't really be trying so hard to find a deep and meaningful one. They're in plain sight when it comes to regretting something."

June sighed, leaning back in her chair. "Everyone has regrets," she said softly. "The infuriating thing about all of this time travel business is that the regret in question, technically, never even happened anymore. Everything about this case is technically a thing that did not happen or shouldn't exist or isn't real anymore and I hate it."

"Sounds to me like you need to start interviewing people," he shrugged, sliding her box across the table and prising open his own. "You'll never get anywhere with theory in this case."

"Maybe I will, Mrs I've-signed-the-Official-Secrets-Act-and-I'm-not-going-to-let-anyone-forget-it-ever," he said with a sniff, placing his feet back on the table and resisting the urge to poke her leg with his big toe.
