"We should have spotted it," she muttered. "We're her parents. How could we not have known?"

"It only seems obvious in retrospect. Never at the present moment." He shook his head. "I wonder if she left a note, but it was lost."

Alfred sat on the couch, looking rather broken. The more he thought about it, the more he analyzed every detail that he knew, the worse he felt.

"Have Will and June written recently?" she spoke at last, still absorbed in the task at hand. She'd decided to change the subject.

"I think Will sent a letter a few days ago. June hasn't written since, well... Since she last mentioned a possible conspiracy with the Department of Mysteries."

"I'd forgotten about that," she murmured, placing a wine glass to one side. "Perhaps we should arrange to meet up in a week or so."

"Maybe. We can do it after Will's last game of the season. Play it off as a celebration. We could use some... some happy company."

Izzy nodded, pursing her lips. "We really should get the kids together at some point too. See how... how they're all doing."

"I wouldn't expect an answer from the Vargases very soon," Alfred snorted. "From what Will said in his last letter, something happened to Feliciano that June won't let him clue me in about. Whatever it is, it's pretty big."

"It's nice of them to keep us in the loop," she muttered, placing the last bowl aside. She'd cleaned everything. Perhaps she could move onto the windows next.

"I'm sure they'll mention it eventually. Maybe Feliciano will come out and say something. Overall, it seems like that family is pretty distressed."

"Feliciano spends his life either distressed or overjoyed," she said softly, her tone bitter. What could compare to losing a child, after all? "I'm sure it's nothing."

Alfred shrugged uncomfortably, moving to change the subject. "I hope the kids are alright. Basch sent a letter just yesterday saying that he took Cora back to Switzerland for the time being."
