Alfred merely nodded, wringing his hands. In this past year, he had involved himself more with Muggles than he ever had in most of the years of his life. It was... not as bad as he had expected, in reality. It was interesting.

"I'll ask at work tomorrow if anyone knows anywhere," she murmured, beginning to tidy the table.

"I... Don't think that would be very advisable for me. There's loads of blood purists in my department; if anyone even breathes the word Muggle..."

"No, I know," she said, placing a gentle hand on his arm. "I'll sort it. Don't worry."

"Sometimes I can still feel her presence," Alfred said softly. "As if she never even left the house at all."

"Maybe she is still here," she murmured. "Watching over us." It was a somewhat comforting thought.

"Wherever she is now," Izzy sighed. "I hope... I just want her to be happy. She was miserable here because we... I failed her. So I hope now she's at peace." I just have to make sure that I don't fail Tessa in the same way.

"Izzy..." Alfred's brows knit together. "Why would you think that you failed her?"

"She wasn't happy," the woman muttered, staying her hands as they sought something to occupy them. "I was her mother. My only job was to make sure that she was happy."

"Izzy," he said softly. "Your job was to care for her. And you did, until the end. There was no way for us to have intervened-- she was at school, we were here. For all we know, her depression started when she started this term."

"I thought you might blame me," she spoke, voice unsteady. "You know the divorce rate for couples whose child has died is between 80 and 90 percent? B- because they start to blame each other. And I thought... You've always been a better parent than I have."

"Don't speak like that, Izzy, you're starting to scare me," Alfred mumbled, a slight shake in his voice. "I'd never blame you. And you're a wonderful mother."

"But how you've handled Tessa, it's just..." She shook her head, pressing the nail of her forefinger to her lower lip. "It doesn't matter. Forget I said anything."

Alfred closed his eyes. "Just... don't blame yourself, Izzy. It wasn't your fault. I'm not sure if it was anyone's fault, for that matter. No one knew the cause, the circumstances... anything. No one was even there when it happened."

Izzy's fingers drifted across her lower stomach. There was a familiar lump in her throat. "Everyone's moved on, Alfred. All of our friends have their own families to look after, and I'm still stuck here. And nobody understands what it's like."

"...Stuck? Stuck where?" Alfred frowned. "You have your own family to look after as well. You've moved on as much as the rest of them have."

"Grieving," she closed her eyes briefly. "I can't do anything without thinking about her. I keep on thinking back to the things we've done together. Like when we went round to June and Will's house last summer, and she sat reading whilst the others were talking. I sat next to her and she looked up and smiled at me. I smiled back. My little girl, smiling at me... She grew up so fast. I feel like I missed most of it."

Alfred rubbed at his temples, suddenly looking much older and much more exhausted than he really was. "Elizabeth grew up more quickly than most children. Too quickly. She was always so serious... we thought she was just mature for her age. But maybe... maybe it was something else."

She turned, not meeting his gaze and staring instead at the floor. "What do you mean by something else?"
