"Anywhere. Unless you'd rather not," she said quickly, noticing his discomfort.

"No, it's alright... Well, right now, I live at the pharmacy, or, above it actually, like any other apprentice. There's not much else besides that. My mother died when I was young and my father soon after. I was lucky enough to be taken in by Mrs. Smith. I would've had nowhere else to go. I'd have been a street rat." Russell was silent for a minute before waving his hand and resuming his cleaning. "Never mind. I don't want to burden you with my personal problems."

Margaret had worked her nail underneath the edge of the seal, teetering on the edge of breaking it. "It's probably nothing. The ambassador came over a few weeks ago. Maybe he's just saying thanks..."

"It's probably that." Maude was full to the brim with curiosity. There's always lying. They could be told that the seal broke while traveling.

"That's all there really is to it though," he replied, looking over at her. Russell set the helmet down, leaning back on his hands. "Why don't you tell me your story then?"

"Trained at the castle with the knights for most of my life. That's all." She picked up a different piece of armor and scrubbed. "I'm sorry about your parents."

"Don't be. I hardly remember them. So...how'd you end up with the knights anyway?"

"I showed up to become a page when I was seven. They let me train and become a squire. It's a pretty good life, basically just serving knights in exchange for training, and not just combat." By some incredible author-induced magic, about three-quarters of the armor was cleaned.

"Wow. It must be interesting having knights for companions. I don't think I'd ever be cut out for that life..."

"Do you enjoy working in the apothecary? Do you learn remedies or anything?" she asked.

"Of course! I can't very well be an apothecary if I can't heal people, can I?" he asked her, smiling faintly. "Now, enjoying it is another story. It's alright most of the time, but usually quite dull. Y'see...the pharmacy's going out of business. We can hardly pay the taxes as it is. It's been like this for a while, but we manage to scrape by. You don't know how happy I was to see you come through that door, you know."

"Taxes, huh? The worst foe," she said. "I'd say it's good that not many need to come to the apothecary, seeing as that means there aren't many sick people, but it's hardly good that it's going out of business."

"Oh...you must not go to many pharmacies. We don't just sell medicines or healing services. Most of our sales are general household items, like that soap I sold you. Mostly it's cleaning supplies or soaps for bathing, if the person we sell it to even gets that luxury."

"I like the medicine part better. It's more interesting." He looked around at the pieces of armor laid out on the blanket. "Well, it seems we've gotten it all cleaned."

By authorly sorcery, he was right- the armor shone dully in the sunlight. "Great! I'll take this back up to the quarters later."
