"Looks like you'll have to be the one running," she said, pulling him out of the way. Eliza unsheathed her dagger, trying to locate the assassin at the top of the stairs. Her answer came from an arrow shot at her. One that she barely dodged. It grazed the side of her head but she tried not to flinch. She'd never been much of a fighter, but in this situation, Eliza felt calmer and more focused than she had in the ballroom. Without missing a beat, she threw the dagger in the direction that the arrow had come from, satisfied when she heard a grunt. "Let's go," she said simply, grabbing Alain's arm and sprinting down the hallway.

Alain stumbled after her, eyes wide. He could hear the door banging open, and turned around to see a man in a black cloak racing after them. "He's gaining on us!"

"And I choose this day to not have perfect aim," she grumbled. "And I don't have any more daggers stashed away..." Eliza glanced sideways, shoving Alain into an alcove in the wall. "You'll run out of arrows eventually!" she shouted to the man in the cloak. Her threat was answered with a couple more shots. Eliza dodged them easily. This man seemed to be a bit out of shape and she could tell he was growing fatigued.

The man was out of arrows. He discarded the crossbow with a snarl and ran towards Eliza, hands curled into fists.

Eliza ducked, managing to avoid his blows. The spot where the arrow had grazed her head stung like an angry swarm of bees, but she tried not to focus on the pain. She aimed a solid kick at the man's shin, but ended up hitting a bit higher... The man crumpled to the floor, groaning in pain. Eliza grinned, running back to Alain and dragging him out of the alcove. "You won't be safe here in the castle. I guess you'll have to pay me a visit sooner than expected."

"To my place," she answered shortly, leading him out into the courtyard and through the main gates. Eliza slowed to a walk, letting go of Alain's arm. She surveyed the dark fields before motioning for the prince to follow her. As her heartbeat returned to its normal rate, Eliza let herself enjoy the chirping of crickets in the tall grass and she almost forgot the prince behind her. It felt nice to be back in her element.

Alain struggled through the tall grasses, shaking. Assassins went after his father all the time, but... this was the first time he'd ever had one go after him.

She nodded understandingly. "It was a good thing I decided to stay for the masquerade, then. I—I don't know what I... Well, it would've been a huge shock to the whole kingdom if they found out that their prince had been murdered."

Eliza fell silent for a minute, glancing over at him. "Stop shaking like that. It makes you look weak," she mumbled, though she put a comforting hand on his shoulder as they walked.

"Yeah. We're nearly there." Soon, they came to a decent-sized cottage and Eliza grinned. "This is it." She walked up and opened the door, but she didn't get a chance to even set a foot inside. A large hound jumped up on her, putting his large paws on Eliza's shoulders and licking her face. Laughing, she ruffled her dog's head. "Yes, yes, I'm home. I know, Gabe! I know you're excited. That's enough! Down, now. Down." Gabe reluctantly hopped down, his tail still wagging furiously. Eliza motioned for Alain to follow her as she walked inside.

Alain carefully walked past the dog. He'd never been allowed to play with his father's hunting hounds. They'd always snap and bite at him if he passed.

Gabe sniffed Alain, drinking in the new scents ravenously, and pausing only to jump up and give the prince's hand a swift lick. "Well, you've already met Arthur, who seems to have found his way back alright." Eliza slipped on her falconry glove, and the peregrine hopped gladly onto her arm.

"Mostly untrained," she corrected. "I've been working with him for a few weeks now. He's proven himself to be a fast learner, and... I think he remembers you from this morning." Arthur had been chirping softly since he'd seen the prince. "Would you like to hold him?"
