"Hold on," Hiranya murmured. "So we're going to drop everything and journey around to find him some teachers? We didn't even have money to feed ourselves more than once in the past three days!"

"You don't really have much choice," Tikaani said. "You could wait a while, if you needed to, I guess, but it's going to happen sooner or later."

"He's only nine years old! What could he even possibly do as the Avatar?"

"It'll take years of training to become a completely recognised Avatar, and he won't be nine years old forever. It's lucky we're in an era of peace at the moment. He should be fine. It's not all fighting. It's more about balancing and peace."

Hiranya stared at the girl and at her brother. Should I let him do this? Is it right for me to impede him? It's not as if he'll be safe doing it. But it's not as if, with our lifestyle, he was ever really safe...

"I could help, with any waterbending training, if needed," Tikaani offered quietly.

"I couldn't teach him firebending," Hiranya sighed. "My skills are ameteur as is. I've never been able to afford proper lessons."

"I'm sure you'd find someone willing. You could train together, probably."

"You'd probably have to go to the fire nation," Tikaani mused. "That's the logical place."

"Depends... he should probably know a decent amount of waterbending first," Tikaani mused. "Rajiv? What can you do so far with water?"

Deep in the forest, a young girl sat by herself amongst the roots of the dappled ground. The dampness of decomposing leaves crept through her garments but she sat solidly, eyes closed against the half-light. It cascaded through the canopy far above her, patchily staining her dark skin a brilliant shade of umber, and catching her wild hair with a hue of vermillion. The girl breathed in, frowning slightly as she noticed slight vibrations nearby. She tried to regain her focus, letting her breath go and inhaling again, but the nagging sensation beneath her legs was too great to ignore. Irritably she opened her green eyes, furrowing her brow as they struggled to adjust to her surroundings.

"I can heal," he informed her, glancing up from the toys at his feet. "And... I can make funny shapes. And ice sometimes."

Tikaani nodded thoughtfully. "Do you think you know enough to survive in any sort of fight?"

The girl stood, stretching her arms above her head and letting out a small disgruntled sound from the back of her throat. A little more awake, she glanced around and let out a sigh of relief. Her mother was gone. The strict woman had stood nearby as she had meditated, issuing threats if she had so much as twitched. Grabbing her bag, she started in the direction of the village. The vibrations were fairly close, and she suspected if she carried on in that direction, she would soon come upon the disturbance.

Hiranya shifted uncomfortably. "We've never really had to fight people. We tend to avoid anyone unless we're in a large public space."

She froze as she drew closer and the vibrations intensified. Tugging on a strand of coiled hair, the girl glanced around. Even if she ran into trouble, the village was nearby and even so, she was fairly sure she could take care of it herself. A smile curved the corner of her lips and she moved forwards, absent mindedly letting her hands drop to her sides to play with the hem of her tunic. After a few more moments of quiet walking, she could see figures through the trees and she retreated behind the nearest trunk, peering around it to observe.

Hiranya sighed, staring at her feet as Rajiv proceeded to show off his waterbending skills. The little pouch that he had drawn from the bag still had some water, and he let it flow out. Raising his hands, he let it float in front of him, curling into elegant shapes. Furrowing his brow in concentration, he allowed the water to freeze, landing in a small chunk at his feet. "I can do that, and heal," he bragged, as if the small display was as impressive as the work of a master.
His sister gazed at the melting ice. Perhaps she should have let Rajiv practice waterbending more. His knowledge of healing came out of necessity-- the less money spent on a doctor, the better. She had pushed him to receive lessons from other traveling performers. Their frequent scrapes from living in the wild has forced him to practice almost daily. But now, his actual bending was about as pathetic as her own. He had never needed to learn and they had never been able to properly make the attempt. And yet, he could master skills that were beyond the capacity of many master benders. Maybe it was because he was the Avatar. But maybe it was her fault. Necessity is the mother of talent, she thought with a sigh, glancing at her own hands. Perhaps that was why she could hardly call herself a firebender.
