Jack stared at his computer screen, barely processing that the television channel had been switched in the living room. He was seated at the kitchen table, fingers clicking away at the keys. Vaguely, a part of him wondered how long it had been since he'd last slept. He'd definitely been awake through the night before, and probably the night before that. Because his mind strayed from his work for a moment, Jack could already feel himself processing just how hungry he was. It wasn't uncommon for him to simply forget to eat when caught up in a particularly difficult job, but now that he was rather than just at his own house, the habit embarrassed him.

Philip watched the news for a few more minutes and upon determining that there wouldn't be much in the way of anything important happening, he stood. So much for having something to do today. Stretching, he wandered towards the refrigerator, opening the door and staring at its contents for a while. Stood there numbly, he looked as if he'd fallen asleep on his feet, an assumption not terribly far from the truth. With a sigh, the Canadian grabbed a diet Coke and let the refrigerator door close on its own. Philip didn't move from his position in front of the fridge, however, and simply stared at the stainless steel with a blank expression on his otherwise tired-looking face.

Jack turned towards the kitchen, rubbing at his eyes. They ached from finally being separated from the bright screen after so many hours, the blunt hurt settling into a harsh pounding behind his skull. Blinking for a few moments, his gaze settled on Philip. He looks more dead than I do. "...Phil? You good?"

Philip's head turned towards the source of Jack's voice after processing the sound for a couple moments. He nodded and let out a small sigh, making his way over to the chair next to his teammate's. Jack looked horrible. The dark circles under his eyes and his messy hair gave away the fact that he'd pulled at least one all-nighter. Maybe two. Philip got up to retrieve his notebook and pen from the countertop, writing, You don't look too great yourself, y'know. The Canadian poked Jack's hand gently with the other end of the pen, giving him and his laptop a chiding look. How long have you been up?

Jack rubbed at his face, slouching in his wheelchair. His glasses lay discarded on the table by his computer. "At this point, I don't even remember. Maybe two full days? Probably somethin' like that."

The Canadian huffed. Of course. He knew Jack often stayed up late to finish homework or a project he'd gotten obsessed with, but it worried him when he took it this far. God knows how many hours he's spent typing away at his keyboard in the middle of the night. The tip of Philip's pen hovered over the paper for a moment as he eyed Jack up and down critically. You need sleep, he wrote simply. Have you eaten recently? he added in cautious script. The concern had surfaced in the mute's mind almost as an afterthought, but his suspicion grew the more he contemplated it. It was certainly likely Jack had forgotten to eat, given his proneness to focusing all of his attention on a project and nothing else.

Jack glanced down at the paper before looking up at Philip again, any attempts to try to act as if he were alert fading away. "I... No," he admitted. "I haven't eaten in a while. I must have forgotten, I guess."

Just as he'd suspected. With that, Philip made his way to a cabinet and pulled out a frying pan. Taking eggs and vegetables from the fridge, he worked quickly. Within ten minutes, he'd turned off the stove and slid a plate covered nearly entirely by an omelette towards Jack. He looked at the dish pointedly as he sat down and popped open his can of soda. Philip could've made something nicer and perhaps a bit more substantial, but he'd rather Jack ate now than in an hour or two.

Jack blinked sleepily at the omelette before looking up at Phillip and smiling, the expression almost accenting the dark circles under his eyes. "Thank you. Are you going to eat, too?"

Philip smiled back at him, answering Jack's question with a shrug. After a moment's consideration, he pushed the laptop away gently, tilting the screen down a bit. Now that the main distraction was out of the way... He gestured at the plate of food and wrote simply, Don't let it get cold.

Jack chuckled a little behind his hand. "Hey, Phil." Slowly, he raised slightly shaking fingers and signed out the words, It's okay. I can use your language now. On the outside, he wore a bright smile, but his heart was beating a little too fast and his stomach began to hurt at the thought of Philip somehow disapproving. "I'm sorry I needed to use some shortcuts, but... only one arm to work with."

Philip's faint smile grew into a grin as soon as he saw Jack's hand signing the first word. Most of the emotion that washed over him was relief. Relief in that he wouldn't have to write everything out, at least not most of the time. Relief in that conversations with his best friend could flow smoothly now, without having to waste time with a pen and paper. A different, warm feeling ached in the Canadian's chest, touched that Jack would go to the trouble of learning to sign. You've been practicing in secret? his hands asked. If it's hard for you, you don't have to sign yourself.

"Heh. Yeah," Jack muttered, scratching awkwardly at the back of his head. "Just a little project of mine. Online guides really help." Relief washed over him in waves as he slowly processed the fact that Phil was happy, Phil was pleased, and felt a smile tug at his lips. "I thought it would make things easier than having to carry around a paper pad all the time. And you can communicate with me over security cameras I hack on missions."

The New Zealander nodded enthusiastically, still in a state of mild disbelief. Why hadn't Jack told him about this? It would've been almost just as much of a surprise if he'd just said he was starting to learn. Philip surprised himself by blinking back a couple tears. He never teared up. Well, almost never. Thank you, Jack, he signed, spelling out his friend's name with care.

(Jhil)
Jack grinned, a warm feeling in the pit of his stomach. Phil was tearing up with how happy he was, and Jack was suddenly overtaken with a brief and ridiculous daydream in which he reached over the table and grabbed the other's hand. Shaking off the thought, he lowered his head instead, hiding his smile and matching dimples. "It's the least I can do to make you more comfortable."

(Definitely Jhil)
Philip shifted in his seat. His smile had dimmed just a notch, but the vague shock and warm happiness remained. In the five months he'd been here, he'd somewhat resigned to a life of printed words and countless sheets of paper, but now... In a swift movement, he moved his chair closer to Jack and leaned over the armrest of the wheelchair to pull him into an embrace. The Canadian knew the gesture was a bit awkward, especially with the wheelchair in the way, but it was still nice.

Jack stiffened at the contact of Philip's skin and shirt over the stump of his arm, but after a moment, returned the embrace, dipping his head into the Canadian's shoulder. He was huge and warm, and reminded Jack somewhat of a grizzly bear-- if grizzly bears teared up at such a small gesture and were much more touchy-feely than Jack had ever expected from his first impression of the guy.

Philip sighed softly, feeling an odd shiver run through him as he felt Jack's head on his shoulder. Truthfully, he didn't exactly want to pull away. The warmth emanating from Jack was enough to make him sleepy again. But if he held this hug for any longer, things would dip into the realm of awkwardness. Even more than they were now. So, Philip retreated, somewhat surprised by the coldness of the room he hadn't noticed before. But never mind. The Canadian settled for smiling softly at the cripple and reminding him again that he should eat his food.

"Yeah, yeah. You're such a mother hen, honestly," Jack snorted, taking a small bite of the omelette. "Though I guess it's nice to have someone that'll keep me from wasting away in front of the laptop." He glanced over at the setup, somewhat surprised by the mess. Crumpled cans of Redbull lay scattered around it, a few sticky drops still left on the table's surface. Pencils and pens lay scattered around as well, crumpled bits of paper covered in doodles and random lines of possible codes. He reached for his glasses, fumbling for a moment to put them on his face.
