He shrugged, smiling. "You smell like chocolate and you're wearing a nice sweater. I'm keeping my head here."

"I meant you thanking me," she chuckled. "But this is alright too. I do agree about the sweater. However, I had no idea I smelled of chocolate."

"All of your sweaters usually do. I think it's the detergent Giovanni uses when he washes our stuff."

"Fair enough. I think Giovanni charms the detergent to make it smell that way though. He's always doing little things like that."

Nicolas shook his head. "I actually think he does it for everyone, a different smell. It's become kind of an easy way for me to identify your guys. Maybe he did it on purpose for that reason...? God, that guy takes being my caretaker way too seriously."

Nicolas managed a small smile. "Yeah. As much as I gripe, I guess it's nice that he always looks out for me."

He drew his knees to his chest, sighing. "Makes me scared for when we're all adults and n our own paths, and I'll have to make do on my own."

"True," he sighed. "I guess I'm just nervous. I think I'll be fine. Anyone makes fun of me, I can whop them on the head with my cane."

He paused. "You know, all day everyone's asked me what it's like to be blind. What's it like to see?"

The question left her slightly taken aback. "I guess I haven't really thought about it... Everything is so...diverse. You're able to know every different shade of color and every bit of shadow. The best way to describe it to you I think would be comparing colors to temperature. Colors like red, orange, and yellow are warm. Imagine red as a blazing fire, orange as a warm blanket, or yellow as a summer morning. On the other hand, green, blue, and purple are colder. Blue is like ice, usually, or perhaps like this lake feels. Green is a rainy day, when you can smell the earth and plants. Purple is breeze on an otherwise hot afternoon. Seeing texture and shadows is quite a bit different, but generally the way it feels is the way it looks and vice versa. Right now, the sun's starting to set and there's no other word I can really use to describe it besides 'beautiful'."

He sighed. "What's seeing people like? Knowing their expression without having to feel it out, knowing how they feel about you just in their eyes like it always says in stories?"
