"Yeah, the only similar things are the nucleus and the cell wall." She fell silent for a minute. "Well, this shouldn't necessarily be too much of a problem. After all, we're only trying to isolate the DNA that causes the side effects, and if the nucleus is the same as Earth cells, then we should be able to extract some DNA."

"Yes… we will have to put this through an analyzer." She pulled away from the microscope. "Well, I will take our sable friend to a more comfortable and spacious cage and observe her for a while. After a week, do you think we will be able to put her back with the rest?"

Joan rolled her eyes. "C'mon Reve, we're adults too. We don't have to go reporting to people first. It's not like we have ranks on this ship or anything. Not us scientists anyway. Besides, this is important. If we can find a way to map the genomes of these plants we find, we could be able to determine new food sources."

"I am not an adult," she mumbled mutinously. She did find herself agreeing with Joan, however- it was very important to analyze the plants. There was still plenty of work to be done, not just with the roots, but with all of the flora they'd discovered. "As soon as I've got the chicken into a better cage, I suppose we should."

Joan tapped a few of the glowing squares on the table, which served as a keyboard, and the holographic screen flickered to life a few seconds later.

Reve stuck some freeform Space Fencing into the floor in the zoology lab and filled it with all of the creature comforts a chicken could ask for. I really must name this chicken. She's unfit for eating now that she's consumed that plant, so it would be fine to get attached to her... She returned to Joan in a hurry.

She tapped a few more of the glowing keys and a cylindrical compartment popped up from the table with a slight hiss. She placed the pieces of root in it and carefully pushed it back into the table. "This should only take a few minutes..."
