A bare, smooth patch of ground free of any bushes that's perfect for battle practice. Also occasionally a good spot for hunting.

Ivyleaf paced the training hollow, waiting for her apprentice. Every once and a while, the deputy would sniff the air for any lurking prey, or lean over and peer back at the camp. Where is he? Late again? I should really talk to him about that...

Harepaw bounded toward the training hollow, cursing himself for being late again. He finally arrived, panting. "'m here," he announced, trying to get his breath back.

Ivyleaf stood, eyeing her apprentice. "I'll give it to you this time, but if you're late one more time, it's moss duty for three days. Are we clear?" She resumed her pacing. "Now, today, we're working on battling on different terrains. The mountains are right over here, so you need to know how to use the elevation and jagged rocks to your advantage."

OOC: Okay, is it one mountain or several? D: Because I thought it was supposed to be one mountain. I'm going to act like it's one mountain until the map gets posted here and this all gets straightened out.
Harepaw bristled instantly. "It's not my fault," he growled. "Some bossy old warrior made me clean up the fresh-kill pile when I tripped over it, it took forever to clean up." He glanced up at the peak in the distance. "Yeah, I've seen PeakClan's mountain before. Are we going to get to climb it?" The challenge died from his mew, replaced by excitement.

(I'm not sure! I think one mountain would probably be okay, but I imaging the entire territory of the clans to kind of be surrounded by them.)
Ivyleaf gazed up at the mountain in the distance. "Yes, eventually, but for now, we're going to practice on the smaller hills around here. The mountain can get pretty steep, and if you fall, that's not good." She turned around, walking towards a patch of jagged rocks a few foxlenghs high that ascended to a small overhang, beckoning for him to follow. "Here, I want you to try and climb this. If you can't, it's alright, but I want you to try to figure it out and take as much time as you need."

Harepaw looked a bit disappointed, but shook it off when Ivyleaf told him the challenge at hand. His eyes narrowed in concentration as he stared at the rock. He waited a few moments, then charged at it, trying to climb the steep face of it. His claws scrambled to find purchase, but they slipped loose, and he tumbled back to the ground.

Harepaw scrambled to his paws, trying to act dignified. "I'm fine," he insisted, though his fur was going every which way from his less-than-graceful landing.

Embarrassed, the tom turned back to the rock, charging at it blindly. He managed to get partially up the face of it until his claws slipped and he slid gracelessly down to the ground again.

Harepaw's ears flattened. "I don't know," he mumbled. He hated admitting he didn't know things.

"That's fine," Ivyleaf nodded. "Climbing is a careful operation, so make sure you're paying attention. Take it slow and try to find footholds, like these." She began to scale the wall, pointing out a few of the jagged rocks poking out from the side. "And always test them before you step on them. If they're loose, they'll fall under your weight."

Harepaw nodded, trying to take in his mentor's words. He padded up to the rock, looking it over, picking out the various nooks where his claws would fit. This time, he took it slow, placing his claws carefully and making sure he had a good grip before he moved on. His paw stumbled once, nearly throwing him off balance, but he got it back. This time, he managed to scale the wall the whole way. He grinned back down at her. "Better, huh?" he asked.

Ivyleaf grinned, joining him up on top of the wall a minute later. "See? It's okay to take it slow at first. Always leave time to learn things, because you never know when you might have to use that skill, and if you don't really understand it, it won't get done right. Now, try getting down again without hurting yourself."

Harepaw nodded, feeling a bit shamed, and holding back any angry comeback he might think of. He really did try to respect his mentor, even if his temper sometimes got the better of him. "Alright." He glanced downwards, trying to pick out the tiny ledges and nooks he'd used to scale the wall, but the angle he was at made them hard to see. He started down slowly, paw under paw, trying to keep his grip on the wall. Not far from the ground, one of his paws slipped, and he lost his grip with his other paws. He managed to save himself from falling totally, half falling, half slithering down the wall, managing to get to the ground on all four paws.

Ivyleaf nodded. "Not too bad for your first time," she called down from the top of the wall. "Why don't you experiment a little bit? Try using different angles."

Harepaw lifted his head proudly, whiskers twitching smugly. He glanced over the wall, trying to figure out a second path. After a few moments, he approached the wall and started to scale it, taking a different path with new ledges and nooks. He was faster at it this time, slithering up the wall to reach Ivyleaf again. Once Harepaw was at the top again, he turned to grin at Ivyleaf. "I'm getting better at this!"

"You certainly are! At this rate, we'll be on the mountain in a few weeks time, so long as you aren't too late for your lessons. Now, what do you want to work on next?"
