Why is nobody doing anything? She realised that somebody was going to have to speak eventually. Lauren cleared her throat, painfully aware of the way it burned from inhaling the smoke. "Come on, you heard Jack. We need to get out of here. We... We can mope around later."

Fernando glanced at her, a cold, solid look that betrayed his crushed spirit. He bent over to pick up the fried chunk of electrical circuits and metal that had once been a cool-looking gauntlet. Looking around the schoolyard one last time- the trees, the fires, the mess, the blood, Victoire, Phillip, and Lauren- he leaned to one side, spilt some blood on the ground, and walked away in silence towards Jack's exit.

Lauren's voice floating from across the courtyard seemed to jostle him. Shakily, he stood. He'd just have to face his team's disappointment. He could leave later. With a heavy sigh, Philip made his way towards the others, head down to hide his face.

Jack bit his lip, locking his phone and looking around. Teachers were herding around students in an attempt to keep the anxious, scared mobs under control. Still, as distracted as they were, a kid escaping via wheelchair was more than a little obvious. Phillip was the only team member he knew of who was physically strong enough to carry him, and he was injured. The crippled sighed, pulling his phone out of his pocket and tapping away. Looks like it's the hard way. As per usual.

Philip glanced at Jack as he approached, looking away quickly. What a sight he must be, covered in blood and now unintentional tears, which he was still blinking back. It was shameful, really. He stopped a few yards away, realizing how bad it would be if the rest of the students and teachers saw him too.

Fernando came up behind Philip. "We use the back exit," he said simply, the sound of his own voice far away to him. "and walk to the base. Can't risk exposure." He walked to the other end of the hallway and opened a door leading to the street, where no cars or firefighter trucks were. "Jack will meet us there. Let's go."

Jack didn't notice Philip as he finished typing out his invasive code, tapping twice on his phone. At that moment, the lights in the burning school began to flicker through the smoke, generators overloading and screaming along with the suddenly activated fire alarms. Satisfied with the blaring noises, Jack made his way away behind a collection of dumbfounded faculty and students. Suckers.

Philip nodded numbly, turning away and following Fernando soundlessly. He raised an arm to try to wipe his face clean, but decided it was too much of a bother. His team already knew of his failure anyway.

Fernando held the door open, looking in again. Where's Lauren and Vic? I'm not sure how long this cacophony will last. he turned to Philip, placing a hand on his shoulder. He had tears in his eyes as well, and his burn marks were beginning to worsen. The young engineer didn't try to comfort the Canadian- he would have hated it if someone tried to comfort him- but offered a look of understanding.

Philip gave him a small nod of thanks, though still not quite meeting his gaze. Right now, he just wanted to get back to the base and hide away in his room for a while. Maybe take a shower, too.

(Yeah, we can)
Philip stood in the corner of the living room, afraid of staining anything red. His eyes rested on each of his teammates in turn, gaze lingering on Jack for a moment longer than the rest before lowering to the floor. He didn't even know why he was still standing there. He should just head to his room instead of standing there looking pitiful.

Victoire was draped across a large blue armchair with a bottle of aloe vera, winding a bandage around her hands. She sighed, glancing the pitiful display of her teammates. "C'mon guys. don't look so dejected. It was our first battle, and it was super impromptu. It's a shame we missed it this time, but it's not the end of this. Next time, we'll know how they fight and we'll be prepared. This isn't over."

"This wasn't even a proper mission. None of us were ready," Jack added, wheeling himself over to sit next to Philip. "And there were no casualties, either. That's a plus. Things don't always go that way. For a first mission..." Jack struggled to find the proper words. He didn't know how to explain himself-- the mission had been a bust, but he couldn't let them give up so quickly. Not on the first day. Not on the first fight.

The Canadian gestured vaguely, wincing when his hand brushed the top of Jack's head and dried blood flaked off into his hair. He turned away, hurrying down the hall to his room.

Fernando stood from his chair abruptly. "Easy for you to say," he snapped, very aggressively, "when it's not your tech, literally everything you live for, that blows up in your face. That lets him get away." He walked out of the room angrily with tears stinging his eyes, entering the lab and slamming the door behind him. A few moments later, a loud bang was audible, and the gauntlet-- or rather, it's remains-- lay destroyed out on the hallway.

Philip sighed as he stepped into the shower. The hot water felt great, but it was shocking to see it run pink as the blood washed away. He let the minutes tick by and the water momentarily wash away his worries. For those ten minutes, he wasn't a failure. But he eventually brought himself to turn off the water, hitting his head on the showerhead as he reached for the faucet. Of course. The bump only served as a painful reminder that he was back in reality now. A letdown once again.

Victoire groaned, letting her head hang over the arm of the chair. "Well, this has been one train wreck of a day. But hey! School's cancelled tomorrow! We'll at least have some quality practice time."

Philip sat on his bed, hair still wet and floppy, staring at the door. Nothing went through his head. His mind was empty now as he watched oblivion. The faint hum of the air conditioner was the only sound, droning and unnoticeable. He half expected the door to open. That plain, white cookie-cutter door you see in every suburban house. Philip waited for it to swing open, but knew that it was probably just stupid hope that someone would come and comfort his stupid feelings.
