"What the hell were you thinking?!" Judas stood from the stool that he had settled at, a piece of machinery clattering to the ground beside him. His voice was harsh, loud, uncharacteristically off-edge.

"I just wanted a book," she replies, almost snappishly. "There wasn't anything else to do, and you were busy." Victoria just about glares at Judas through narrowed eyes. "I won't do it again, alright?" she continues, in a gentler tone this time. She throws open the door to her room and, with care, tosses the novel onto the bed, turning back to Judas with her arms folded over her chest.

"You could have endangered me and Jacob and all of this, just because you were bored and wanted a book?" Judas snapped, picking up the fallen automaton. His accent was becoming stronger now, words becoming less pronounced and more heavy. "You need to start thinking past the present and actually consider future consequence. And more importantly, if you want to stay here long, you need to start thinking less about yourself and more about the bigger picture. In case you forgot, I have a family to feed. And you, now, as well." After a minute of silence, he took a deep breath, unclenching his fists. His voice was calmer, more gentle. "I know it's a lot to get used to, thinking about this, especially after you've been living alone for so long. But you have to start adjusting. What I-- what we do in here-- is very dangerous and very illegal. You need to be careful."

"Is it so bad to want just a bite of some entertainment other than work?" Victoria sighs, her voice accented with a pleading sort of undertone. "I understand the risk, but I was careful. I was..." Her gaze comes to rest on the floor of the lab for a moment, before jerking back up to meet Judas's. "Look. I'm sorry, okay? You don't need to lecture me like a parent to his misbehaving child. I'm not five." Of course he was angry. Why did she even allow herself to hope for a second that he would be understanding, or at the very least, forgiving. Of course he didn't understand. He wasn't the one who hadn't even held a book in ten years.

"The don't act like it," he countered, shaking his head. Of course she didn't understand. She probably didn't have to take care of anybody other than herself for most of her life. Why did he even allow himself to hope that she could just accept that what she did was wrong? She wasn't the one who had a family to feed, an apprentice to teach, a shop to run, rent to pay, and a familiar to take care of. Maybe there's time to actually teach her to think past herself.

Victoria gives him a look that could kill. "You don't have to be insulting to get your point across," she mutters lethally. "Maybe if you weren't so stuck-up..." Victoria pauses and sighs. "Besides, even if I had been caught, it's not like I would've ratted you out. I'm not like that."

"Scare you? You almost make it sound like you were worried about me," Victoria snorts, as if she'd just heard a stupid, but amusing joke. "But yeah, understood." Her arms uncross and she lets her hands rest on her hips. Arguing felt good. She hadn't gotten an opportunity like this since she and her father lived together. They'd have long, drawn-out, and elaborate debates that could go on for days, as long as one of them brought it up again. She especially likes arguing with Judas. His fierceness allows her to bite back with the same fire, unlike the more civil brawls of the past. It was also one of the only times she's seen him show any real character so far. Otherwise, he was fairly similar to a drab stick resting in the mud.

Judas stared at her for a while, expression unyeilding, eyes sharp. Something about her infuriated him. The fact that whenever he lashed out, she always bit back, and could never just accept what he said and turn away. But at the same time, maybe that was why he kept her around. And as much as he hated to admit it, maybe he was a bit more worried about her well-being than that of his work. Not that she'd ever get to know. It would only inflate her already-huge ego.

Victoria lets out a short puff of breath, staring back with a gaze just as scrutinizing. As much as Judas confuses and interests her, as much as she wants to test him, to poke her toe into the waters of this young man, to push him to the brink, to experiment, to see if he could possibly show some genuine emotions besides maybe anger... She can't. Not now, anyway. He's promised her a lesson after all. Testing the waters would just have to wait. "Alright, then. Fun's over. I'm supposed to be learning your trade, aren't I? I'm ready if you are."

He sighed, shrugging his coat off and withdrawing a leather-bound book from within. "Here. You'll need to start keeping notebooks of work. This will be your first." The book was heavy, with thick cream pages and a violet cover. It was obviously brand new, and more than a little expensive.

"Oh. Thank you..." she mumbles, surprised by the gift. Something simple and plain would've sufficed. Victoria takes the book carefully, as if it's something fragile. She trails her fingers over the soft leather cover and inspects the binding before looking back up at Judas. She offers him a small smile. "Thank you. I don't deserve it, but thank you."

Of course, spending seven years playing in a lab and an inventor who showed you his creations did wonders for learning about things like electricity. But Judas didn't know that. "With all due respect sir, I am not completely unlearned. I have some experience in the basics."

Victoria nods and sits herself down on one of the stools. She can't deny herself the fact that she's at least a little excited. Most of what she knows is in theory, not practice, and the prospect of actually being able to make something worthwhile—and out of tools more advanced than a wrench or screwdriver, no less—is appealing to her.
