Vincent took to stroking Ricardo's hair, brushing it away from his face and running his fingers lightly through it. "But for now, I'll be here."

Vincent took Ricardo's hand in both of his own, knowing he shouldn't wake him but wanting to comfort him all the same. "It's okay," he murmured, voice barely above a whisper. "I'm right here."

He picked at his bandages in his sleep, breaths becoming quick and shallow-- just as they had been under the crushing hold of the tendrils of fog.

"It's okay," Vincent repeated. "You're okay." He squeezed Ricardo's hand, holding it tightly. He wanted to wake and comfort the Gryffindor so badly, but he needed the sleep. Vincent just couldn't stand to see him like this.

About an hour later, Ricardo woke, breathing hard. His dream had simply been a re-play of the events by the lake, the constricting dog enveloping him and stealing his breath once more.

Vincent jerked awake from his doze and, noticing Ricardo's state, leaned forward to wrap him in a hug. "Thank Merlin you're awake."

Ricardo flinched at his touch, before allowing himself to relax and leaning his head in Vincent's shoulder.

Ricardo said nothing, only trembled in Vincent's arms as the scene replayed over and over in his head. The echoing crack of his ribs. The feeling of skin ripping as the tendrils got tighter. The pounding ache in his skull and fire in his lungs. Before he knew it, tears were falling thick and fast from his eyes.

Vincent rocked him back and forth gently, letting Ricardo cry into his shoulder. It was all he could do. I did this to him... And now he's having nightmares. All of this is my fault. It's all my fault. He sighed and closed his eyes, unsure if he'd ever be able to forgive himself.
