Carnelian followed hesitantly, seafoam and sand collecting on their standard-issue prison boots. The shattered gem fragments felt almost searingly hot in their pocket as the orange gem approached the water.

Coral hesitated at the edge of the ocean, seawater washing around her ankles. Although, her hesitation lasted for only a mere moment before she dove gracefully headfirst into the surf.

Carnelian took a moment to carefully prod the water with their foot, before tripping on something and splashing in anyway.

Coral's head popped up a moment later. She shook water from her hair and searched the surface for Carnelian. Upon being unable to find them, she frowned and ducked under again. Her eyes searched the sandy waters until they spotted a dark, vaguely Carnelian-shaped figure floating a little ways away.

Carnelian struggled to the surface, blinking salt water from their eye. They looked around, touching the fingers of one hand to their soaked hair, which had gone from vibrant red-orange to a dark burgundy color. Coral's head had bobbed above the water a little ways away, and they swam towards it, unused to the movements after having gone so long without practice.

"Oh, good," Coral breathed with a ghost of a smile, moving towards Carnelian. "Come on, the reef is just a little ways out." She ducked under again, swimming fluidly through the force of the waves headed towards the beach.

Carnelian followed, hastily patting their pocket to make sure that the shattered bits of rock were still safe and trying to ignore the salt water that had begun to burn their eyes and throat.

After a bit, Coral stopped and broke the surface. The water around them was calm now and crystal-clear. Below them, a huge expanse of coral stretched over the seabed, shining brightly in vivid hues of purple, orange, pink, and green. Sea anemones and starfish studded the seascape and countless fish darted between clumps of seaweed and hunks of stony coral. Giant clams were nestled into the sandy bottom and huge groupers floated lazily alongside them, their huge mouths gaping to let tiny shrimp clean them.

Carnelian stared at the coral, eyes wide as they took in all of the bright colors. The palette and activity of the reef reminded them somewhat of homeworld, with all of it's vividly colored gems and shining machines. They could feel themselves relaxing, tension leaving their shoulders. "It... wow."

"See?" Coral grinned. "Isn't it amazing? Everything so beautiful and beautifully effiecient. All of these organisms coexist and even help each other sometimes. It's just incredible. This whole reef, this whole ecosystem, is like one big machine. But it's alive." She stared down through the blue water, seemingly mesmerized, until she dove, akin to a koi or perhaps a small cetacean, into the depths.

Seemingly controlled by some greater force, Carnelian dove in after Coral, mesmerized by the colors. How could Homeworld have called this planet expendable? They reached out to touch some seaweed, a sudden memory re-playing itself in the watery depths.
They were screaming, the sound soon caught into a thousand desperate bubbles as the escape pod threw itself into the depths of an unknown world's ocean. Bright green hands, madly working at the belts binding the orange gem to the seat. Swimming away through a fractured window, turning back just as the pod was crushed by an unseen boulder from above. Just as she was about to escape. The unmistakable screech of a gem shattering to a thousand pieces.
They withdrew their hand, eyes wide kicking up to the surface for air.

Coral was down by a large drop-off, playing with a sea pen when she heard muffled turbulence in the water. She left the cnidarian alone and swam up to meet Carnelian at the surface. "Are you okay? What happened? Did you step on a stingray?"

Carnelian was breathing hard. Between breaths, she managed a brief string of words. "I'm fine--" breath. "I'm okay--" breath. "Bad, bad, bad memories."

"I, um... I'm sorry," she said softly, pushing back a mass of wet hair away from her face. She reached out and put a gentle hand on their arm. "Here, I know something that'll cheer you up." Coral offered a small smile. "Follow me."

"O-okay." Carnelian felt warmth spread from the place Coral's hand had been as they followed.

Coral led them along the reef, above the squirrelfish, spanish dancers, and occasional blacktip sharks. Eventually, the coral started to thin out and the reef gave way to and expanse of mostly sand and seagrass. Southern stingrays drifted lazily along the bottom and tiny, silvery fish darted between the greenery. There were even a couple times when Coral could just make out the dark grey mass of a nurse shark in the distance. After some time, she stopped and floated to the surface to tread water, motioning for Carnelian to follow.

Carnelian followed along, not daring to look down. Every hint of blue reminded them of the escape pod, every flash of silver another Boulder, bright green becoming the same familiar face.

"We're here," Coral told them, grinning. "It'll be just a couple minutes now. I'm sure they're on their way as we speak." The splotched gem watched the seafloor expectantly, eyes narrowed in concentration. Suddenly, she cried out, "THERE THEY ARE!" and disappeared underwater.

Carnelian jumped at the sudden volume, watching Coral as she dove in. They hesitated, staring at the water for a second before closing their eyes tightly and following.

From the seagrass emerged a dozen or so green sea turtles, swimming gracefully towards the two gems. Coral was absolutely beaming as the big reptiles settled down to graze. She looked around at Carnelian, pointing frantically at the turtles. A smaller, curious one swam slowly up to them and Coral gladly scratched its head and shell.
