Based on the book I'm reading right now! It's called The 5th Wave by Rick Yancey, and it's really good! I'm only about halfway through, so I won't spoil anything for you guys, but I thought it would make an interesting roleplay. 
It all started when the mothership entered the atmosphere- or maybe it was a little bit after that. Nobody expected aliens. Nobody expected anything. It just happened, and all at once, it became a wild guessing game. Some thought they were here to save us, enslave us, join us. Nobody thought they wanted to kill us all, but we found that out eventually.
The Others waited in Earth's orbit for what seemed like forever, until nobody expected them to do anything at all. And then, the 1st Wave happened, and nothing was the same:
1st Wave: They sent out an EMP wave- wiped out all of the power and electricity. Cars stopped, planes fell out of the sky, and everything was dark. The power stayed out.
2nd Wave: The Others dropped a bar into the ocean-a really big one- and all at once, the coasts were wiped out. Tsunamis caused cities closer to the sea to flood and submerge. Only the inland remained. Only the lucky survived.
3rd Wave: The most deadly wave yet: The Others used birds to spread their virus. They call it the Red Tsumani, and it's extremely contagious. It starts with headaches, fatigues, and it only gets worse from there. Right before it kills you, you completely bleed out. The disease has a 90% kill rate. Only the unlucky survived.
4th Wave: There are so few humans left, and 1/3 of the ones that are are suspected to be... Not human. The Red Plague is still around, killing off people. Now though, the stakes are higher. Humanoids suspected to be sided with The Others still roam the countryside killing off any survivors they see. You can't trust anyone you meet, because anyone could be one of them. You might never know your ally isn't your ally until their gun is staring you in the face.
And so, the last population of humans is dwindling, and the survivors are struggling. Will you be able to avoid the Red Tsunami and survive the Silencers? Anyone you meet could be one of them. Don't trust anyone. Good luck, and may you find the strength to live for just another day.
