She smiles down at Jacob softly, amused by his presence in her lap, despite his large size. Victoria takes up petting him again, her strokes methodical as she watches the door to the lab absent-mindedly.

Jacob briefly raised his head to sniff at her jaw. "I wonder what your dream was," he mumbled, knowing that she'd only hear whimpers. "You were all cold and shaky. And sweaty. It was kind of gross."

"Oh, I don't know what to think anymore," Victoria says to the dog after a moment. "Today's been way too confusing for my liking. In more ways than one..." Briefly she thinks back to John, which immediately elicits a mental gag. If she'd been stuck there for even a bit longer, who knows what he would have done to her, or tried to do...

Jacob let out something like a laugh. "Yeah, he is awkward and weird. Dunno why you like him so much."

Victoria looks at the boxer curiously before returning her gaze to the door. "You know," she says a bit later, "He's taking quite a while out there..." With care, she moves Jacob from her lap and stands, walking to the exit. Cautiously, she opens the metal door, exhibiting almost as much hesitation as she had that day she returned from the bookstore.

Judas was on the phone, writing down a customer's order as he spoke. "Yes... we do have that in stock. You'll pick it up... tomorrow afternoon? Good, good. Alright. Goodbye."

Victoria stands by the door in silence, once again caught in the trap of sudden muteness. The silence envelops her in a way that can only be described as awkward. So she's left with two choices: speak and seem clingy, or wait for Judas to discover her there and have him think she was watching him. Either option was unsavory.

Judas didn't notice Victoria behind him. Rather, he punched a few numbers into the large keypad before lifting the telephone to his ear again. "Hello. It's Judas. Ah, yeah, the usual for me, but... yes, this time I'm ordering for two. ... No, no, no, it's not like that." After an awkward laugh and a few more instructions, Judas hung up the phone again.

Victoria takes the opportunity to approach as if she'd just come from the laboratory. She throws Judas a quick smile, hugging herself self-consciously, though it was an attempt to be casual. "It was getting a little stuffy in there," she explains.

Judas looked up. "Huh. Alright, then, you can just stay out here. Are you in any state to dust the shelves, or should I?"

"The bullet grazed my head, not my hands," she replies, finding a rag to wipe down the shelves with. Carefully, she moved or lifted the various automatons as she progressed through her work, having to stand on tiptoe to reach the higher shelves.

Judas flipped through accounting records, occasionally stealing a glance at her. Just making sure that none of my machines get damaged, he insisted to himself silently. Or that she suddenly faints or something.

By the time she's finished, Victoria's hair and shoulders are covered in a fine layer of dust, along with a few bits of lint. But at least the shelves are clean. She goes to put the rag away and glances at Judas in passing, thinking to herself that even dusting must be better than looking through papers.

Judas went on through the slow, torturous task of sorting through his financial accounts and comparing them with the letters that he had received from the bank. It was dull work, but someone had to do it.

"Hey," Victoria says upon returning to the main part of the shop. "You want any help with that?" She gestures to the stack of records and paperwork loosely.

"Oh. Uh, yeah, alright." Victoria sits down by a window and watches the people pass by on the street. Men and women of all shapes, sizes, and class. People with children and people hurrying past with briefcases. Eventually, Victoria found herself nodding off, only to be jerked awake by a knock at the door.

Judas paused to look up at the delivery boy, carrying two bags of streaming food. "Go get that, Victoria, will you?"

"Yeah, of course." Victoria stands and greets the delivery boy at the door. In exchange for a few bills and coins, he hands her the food, which Victoria places on a corner of Judas's desk after the boy's left.

"You can start eating," he muttered, not looking up. "I have to finish here."
