Coral sighed in relief, climbing the ladder to the attic. "We had it in a bubble in the temple, but somehow, it escaped. We're not sure how. Thank you for killing it."

Carnelian stood on their toes, running a hand over the top of the wall. The axe had made a very deep cut, allowing wood to bend and splinter around the gaping hole. "Sorry about that. I can fix it if you want."

"That's alright." Coral shook her head. "Not right now, anyway. It's not necessarily urgent."

"Thank you, Carnelian, by the way," Tanzanite said, turning to the orange gem. "I didn't see that thing at all."

"No problem," Carnelian murmured, raising their eyebrows with a grin."It's not like I was gonna let it kill you."

Tanzanite smiled slightly. "I would have done the same for you," she replied, before turning to the others. "How did your... mission, go?"

"Well, it was a bust, obviously," Coral answered. "We were looking for that thing Carnelian killed. By the way, where is the gem?" Coral glanced around the floorboards nervously. "Did one of you manage to bubble it? And did you send it to the right place?"

"I managed to... bubble it," Tanzanite answered. "I assume I sent it to the correct place."

"By the way, you have got to teach me how to do that bubble thing. It looks cool."

"I can teach you a day or so before our next scheduled mission," Coral offered. "That way you'll be able to practice. I'm going to go check the temple for the gem, so I'll be right back." With that, Coral slid down the ladder and hurried down to the temple door, taking two stairs at a time.

Carnelian turned around, eyeing the attic. "Well. Maybe if I do a good job patching this hole up, she can let me paint the walls red. Or orange. Though Morganite will probably let me sooner than Coral will."

Tanzanite laughed. "You're already making plans? We've barely been here a few hours."

"I like this place. I don't feel like giving up a chance to have an actual roof over my head anytime soon." They smiled, leaning against a wall. "Besides. This is the first time I've spoken to another gem, let alone three other gems, since my cell mate back on homeworld. And then I was put in solitary confinement for a while."

"Oh? How long were you in there for, before you... got out?" she asked, letting her curiosity get the better of her.

Carnelian shifted on their feet, turning to look Tanzanite in the eye. Still, when they began speaking, the orange gem found it difficult to keep eye contact with her. "I'm.... not really sure, to be honest. When they put you in solitary confinement for a while..." They looked away, shrugging. "You kind of lose track of time. For a while before that, I was in on and off. I had connections, called in favors... so they only gave me a slap on the wrists. Either that or they shoved me in cells that were child's play to escape. Then they caught me doing something pretty big... my time in prison after that probably took a pretty decent chunk of my life."

Tanzanite nodded slowly, not saying anything for a moment. That would have been a long time. A thousand years, or more, probably... guess we just don't know for certain. "And, uh... what made you come to Earth?"

"I had dedicated myself to destroying the Kindergartens. I wasn't about to sit around in a cell doing nothing. So the one way I could really continue that-- and go somewhere where they wouldn't bother hunting me down-- was Earth."

"Ah." Tanzanite was intrigued. She had never met another gem with a story quite like this. "You seem to have had... interesting experiences. Thank you for sharing with me, Carnelian."

Carnelian smiled, meeting Tanzanite's eyes again. "No problem. What about you? What's your story?"

"My story?" She shifted her feet, looking down. "I left Homeworld a while ago, I guess. I can't really remember how long ago. And I've just travelled ever since. Never really staying in one place for long."
