"O-okay." Moby adjusted his flower crown. He'd only told her the beginning of all of it. There were a lot of things that she still didn't know, and that she probably should know. For her own good. But Moby was glad Viola had changed the subject. He settled himself in the grass, ready to listen.

"I grew up in the city. Middle class, but we were still pretty well off. I came from a really long line of housewives, but since I was a little kid I decided that I wanted to change that and become a doctor. I started studying just last year, but I had a small career as a model on the side."

"Really?" Moby leaned forward a bit in interest. "I can't say I've met a model before. Or a real doctor, for that matter... I guess the modeling was to help pay for medical school?"

"It's too bad you had to give it up once your family died," Moby said, not really thinking before he spoke. "You look like you were good at it." He leaned back against a rotted tree trunk covered in moss and plant shoots. For once in his life, he actually felt somewhat carefree.

"Oh. Thank you." She looked away, shrugging. "I'd like to say I was good at it. But then again, I hated it whoever they'd edit the pictures afterward."

"Oh." He wasn't exactly sure what Viola meant, but he had an idea, and she sounded disappointed by it. "I'm um...sorry about that." Moby paused. "So, why'd you quit medical school? How'd you end up in the streets in the first place?" he asked softly. "You're too good for the streets."

She shrugged, tracing circles in the dirt by her feet. "I had to. My intuition had been bugging me for a long time about the pandemic. My city had been fine for the most part, and I blinded myself to what was going on. Then my sister died... I knew I had to leave right then or I'd die too. And I barely escaped."

"But surely you have other relatives you could go to," Moby said, brow furrowing in confusion. "Surely someone out there knows some family member of yours," he continued as he fiddled with a dried leaf. "I mean... You're not a lost cause like me, you shouldn't have to give up your dream."

"How can I accomplish my dream in a ruined society? There are no clinics for me to work in, Moby, three-quarters of the Earth is dead! The best way for me to actually work is to use my abilities in exchange for supplies. But apparently that's kind of a bust, too."

"I'm...sorry," Moby mumbled, hanging his head and staring at the leaf in his hands. "I'm sorry..." he repeated in a softer voice. The flower crown Viola had made slipped from Moby's head, falling into his lap with a tiny thud. "I just... Never mind."

She Took the crown with a tiny smile, placing it on her own head. "You have nothing to be sorry for, Moby."

"But I am," he replied, glancing up. "I'm sorry your family died. I'm sorry you had to give up your chance of being a doctor. I know I probably shouldn't be sorry, from a practical standpoint, but..." Moby shook his head, "People like you, people who actually had a chance of living a fulfilling, successful life, don't deserve this."

She shook her head, tears brimming her eyes. "Thank you, Moby. But we can't concentrate on what might have been. We just need to think about how to survive now."

Name: Dr. Luc Keogh Age: 24 Appearance: He stands at medium height with a rather average build, and has few distinguishing physical features. He has short, dark hair and brown eyes, and a strong jawline. His skin is a few shades pale of olive, and he would appear to be of European descent. Other: Luc specialises in cardiothoracic surgery, although he has a history of experience in emergency medicine too. Having dedicated the majority of his adolescence to studying, he comes across as socially inept and cripplingly introverted at the best of times. However, his brilliant mind has led him to researching disease, particularly focusing on haematology. He is an outstanding surgeon and emergency doctor, but his bedside manner has frequently been called into question. Since the outbreak, Luc's general attitude has deteriorated rapidly, and he prefers to surround himself with his studies, for what it's worth.

Dr Keogh sat alone in his office, arm stretched out in front of him. A blood collection tube was clasped in his right hand, and he threaded a needle into a holder before sliding the tube over it. Carefully, he poised the needle above his left forearm, leaning in slightly to get a better view. The needle slid through his bruised skin easily, and he let out a satisfied sigh as the collection tube started to fill with blood. As he waited, Luc's gaze travelled across the room to the far wall. The cabinet door was open, and the inside was lined with small tubes of the dark liquid; the summary of months of work. They were labelled nearly in his doctorly scrawl. Most of the blood was his own, although he had managed to obtain much of it from patients too.

A series of somewhat hesitant knocks sounded from the door before it swung open without waiting for an answer from the room's sole inhabitant. Yuka Konno - or Konno Yuka as she would have been called by her parents - was hanging on the fringes of distress. Sure, she had noticed the doctor's... obsession with his research when they had first met but was it really healthy? She had to admit, she too was once frantic over delving further into the mysterious disease that had wiped out the majority of the human population but it was a long and arduous task, especially with her limited medical knowledge. But that was then. Spending her days hunched over oddly shaped, reverse-napiform flasks and test tubes never did her, or anyone for that matter, any good. "Doctor Keogh?" Caught in the moment of watching the man draw blood from himself yet again, she had almost forgotten the reason why she had appeared at his door in the first place.

Luc's eyes flitted back to the tube, which was roughly half-filled with his own blood. He suppressed the urge to roll his eyes as the knocks sounded from the door. As if he even needed to look up to discern who exactly was visiting this time. He ran through the list of her current patients in his mind, wondering to himself which one she needed assistance with. "If it's the man with the wink, he's not attracted to you, he's got an acute nictitating spasm and he's bedblocking - best move him on before he wastes any more of our time and resources. If there was one thing Dr Keogh hated more than anything else in the world, it was time wasters. "Although Mrs Summers in bed four has a rather odd looking napiform femoral hernia, which will need removing. It's not a priority right now though. Theatre's tied up with a few cases of crush syndrome, and I doubt they'll be free for another couple of hours at least."

Moby looked away, watching the stream flow by. He hadn't expected to actually care about this girl and her problems, especially so soon after meeting her. It was odd. Then again, he'd never really had a friend to care about. "Do we even have a plan? I mean for the long term."

She flushed a brilliant red at the man's implications, clearing her throat in attempt to maintain a somewhat dignified air around her. As if it would work with the older man anyway but it never hurt to try. "Actually, it's about those makeshift stents that we tried out on Mr Russo the other day, they've been bothering him and seem to have collapsed again-" Because apparently, a napiform 'balloon' was a poor substitute for the real thing. Of course, in such times, they had to make do with what they had, none of the patients seemed to be complaining anyway. It was almost by pure good fortune that she had stumbled across the building and the doctor himself. "-and I don't think that fiddling around with the arteries of some man is really my area of expertise. I'm sure he'll be fine for the time being but I just thought that you should know."
