The doctor didn't remove his gaze from his work as he tugged the needle from his arm and deposited the holder into a bucket below his desk in one fluid movement. He held the now-full collection tube up to the light, eyes narrowing slightly. "Book him a theatre slot for tomorrow afternoon; I'm sure he'll survive until then. Removing the stent won't be easy, so you can get Dr. Ashfield to do it. He was the one with the idea of a napiform stent in the first place - honestly, the man's an imbecile." Luc stood to make his way over to the cabinet, testing the weight of the collection tube in his hand.

Napiform stents. It wasn't like anyone truly expected them to work but it had always been worth a shot, it was better than nothing anyway... Unless the medicine applied to the stents was nearly past the expiration date like theirs were, that was borderline dangerous, potentially triggering a case of somewhat severe bruxism from the pain. "Understood. If anything urgent comes up, I'll come back but it should be around time for the daily rounds anyway." Yuka nodded, casting a weary look at the most recent blood sample and pulling a face. "Mrs Battersby requested for your help with a sponge bath the other day, not sure if you'd take her up on it though. The elderly always seem to like having you around anyhow, God knows why." She quipped, struggling to hide a smile.

She shook her head, tears brimming her eyes. "Thank you, Moby. But we can't concentrate on what might have been. We just need to think about how to survive now." "I know, I know," he sighed. Moby looked away, watching the stream flow by. He hadn't expected to actually care about this girl and her problems, especially so soon after meeting her. It was odd. Then again, he'd never really had a friend to care about. "Do we even have a plan? I mean for the long term."

"I... Don't know," Viola sighed. "We're going to run out of food sooner or later. The city is overrun by gangs probably, but there's a small residential area just west of here. Maybe we can go there to scavenge? We're also going to have to learn to hunt eventually."

"Perhaps because I don't indulge in the sort of mindless chatter that the nurses seem to prioritise. If our staffing levels weren't already so low, I expect most of them would be unemployed by now." His statement was slightly punctured as he closed the cabinet doors, locking it carefully with a key from around his neck. He strode back to the table to tidy his supplies, brow furrowed. "You know, we can't continue like this. Not enough nurses, low supplies, napiform stents." He gritted his teeth. "I had a nurse tell me we were running low on saline the other day. It's bloody saltwater; go to the beach and collect some!"

Maybe we can go there to scavenge? We're also going to have to learn to hunt eventually." "I've kind of figured out how to make traps," Moby offered. "We might be able to catch some rabbits or something..." He trailed off, lapsing into his own thoughts. Were the rest of their lives just going to be surviving, without any contact with the rest of the world. It was what Moby had been doing since not long after he was born, but this future still looked pretty bleak. "How about let's not worry about all this for right now? We should live in the moment if we want to get anything done."

"Let's go to that residential area I was talking about. It's a tiny little farm town. Ranches and all that. I doubt there's anyone who would attack."

He nodded. "Okay. Do you think we should drop off the blackberries at the barn first?" Shouldering his pack, he stood, though not before dipping his hand into the stream to take a drink. The water tasted as clear as it looked. So much better than the city water. He offered Viola his other hand. Even though he knew she probably didn't need it, he figured he should try being nice.

It's bloody saltwater; go to the beach and collect some!" If anything at all, her last remark hadn't helped him to lighten up in the slightest. "We're also going to have to consider the patients' mental health, don't we? In some ways, the 'mindless chatter' helps people come to terms with what has happened, you know, returning some sort of normality to their lives because on the outside, there's anarchy on the streets. Most buildings have been ransacked and people are still dying every day." Yuka paused, shaking her head and sighing a moment later as the doctor continued with his rant. But she had to agree, napiform stents were an issue yet most likely the least of their worries. She had almost snorted when he mentioned the saline, in the past, it might have been enough to elicit a laugh from the girl but their situation was far too dire for that. "The penicillin supplies are quickly becoming an issue too, Doctor Stanfield finished an inventory check this morning so he should have sent a copy of the report to you..."

Viola took it gratefully, brushing grass off of her pants. "No. We don't want the rats to get to it. Best to just keep them with us. Who knows? We could use them for trading. Or snacks," she added hopefully. "Snacks are nice."

Her comment elicited an eyeroll from the cardiothoracic surgeon. He had never liked Doctor Stanfield, with his arrogant nature and bulbous, napiform nose that always seemed to pry into the business of others. Being a somewhat secretive man, Luc had immediately identified him as a threat to his privacy. And now he was being entrusted with the inventory check? "Ah yes, I glanced over it just a few hours ago. In future, if you ever have to employ someone to deal with important hospital statistics, please make a degree in mathematics one of the necessary requirements, because apparently advanced level maths doesn't fully qualify someone to be able to count. Had I ever referred to the supply of pentazocine as 'under pressure', my superiors would have sacked me straight away. We deal with hard facts here, not sketchy figures." Luc dunked the used epuipment into a bowl of clear solution, wiping down his hands on the leg of his scrubs before sinking into his chair. He studied his bruisedforearm idly. "I remember a time when I wasn't surrounded by idiots, you know?"

He motioned for Viola to lead the way, trying to imagine what this ranch she was talking about would look like.

"Probably little things we could use. Sewing supplies, soap, coats, other fruits... Hey, if we get lucky, we could get some matches! Or raincoats-- to patch up the holes in the roof." Viola grinned, the thoughts of supplies filling her with new vigor a she walked. Even the sun seemed a little brighter. "There's plenty of small things we could get."

Moby smiled. "Yeah, maybe so. I could really go for a coat or some soap. Which reminds me, we might actually be able to wash in the stream," he said, excitement in his voice. "Man, I haven't had a bath in forever. Matches would be nice too, for fires at night if it ever gets cold." He snagged a couple wild raspberries in passing, handing one to Viola. "The only trouble would be finding people to trade with us. As in, people who wouldn't want to kill or rob us."

"Easy. People with families. They'd pay more attention to getting supplies for kids and old people than trying to murder people in good physical condition. Old people by themselves are also a good idea. For helping them a bit they'd be sure to give us stuff."

"But, what if—" Moby broke off and sighed, shaking his head. "Never mind. How far away is this ranch thing you were talking about?" he asked instead, shoving his hands in his pockets. He hoped they'd get there soon. He was eager to find some things that they could use. He just hoped there weren't many people there anymore...

"Ranch town," she corrected, crossing her arms. "And it's due west. Which I think..." she looked up at the sky before pointing to her left. "That way?"

ETA, five minutes." The urgency in her tone was evident.

It's already past noon and we still have to get back to the barn by nightfall. That's when the robbers come out." He was left wondering if they'd actually encounter any people at this ranch town. Most of him hoped they wouldn't, but he knew they needed supplies. That is, if anyone wanted to trade.

Still, he said nothing on the matter. It was the proposed stabbing that intrigued him the most. "Excellent," he announced, slinging a stethoscope around his neck from the back of the chair and getting to his feet. "I've not dealt with a stab wound for ages. Tell everyone I'll take it; Yuka can assist. And fetch a competent nurse, please. Preferably someone who won't be daunted by a shortage of saline."
