Not too far away, a scrawny boy sat among the rubble of an old building. A post office. Half of it had crumbled away, leaving the trees and ivy to invade and sprout up amongst the broken bricks. He sat in the corner, where the P.O. boxes used to be. What was left of them were broken locks and metal doors. Each of them had been raided. The boy carefully opened a package, looking around to make sure no one was around. He took out the fruit pie (a treasure of a find) glistening with frosted-on sugar. He tried to savor it, but his hunger drove him to stuff the rest in his mouth, letting the sweet filling spill over his tongue. It was a small pleasure, but these days, one couldn't be thankless.

Viola glanced upwards, lifting her hand to block bright heat from her eyes. It appeared that she was at the edge of some city. Pained, the former medical student forced her gaze away. It brought back memories of the too-tense world that had finally ceased to die not long ago. Still, it was hard not to remember steering Katie away from the television as world leaders accused one another of housing bioterrorists. The bombs had come shortly after, destroying major cities and letting thousands of innocent lives burn to dust.

He leaned back against the wall, closing his eyes and swatting away bugs as he dozed, a luxury he rarely allowed himself. He was jerked back to reality by distant shouts echoing among the ruins of the small city. Staggering to his feet in panic, he gathered up his pack and the fruit pie wrapper. His pack contained the only things he owned. A short length of rope, a few bobby pins, a broken Maglite, and a few smuggled packs of Fig Newtons. Even if it took him a precious extra second to pick up, he couldn't leave it behind. He ran off into the woods behind the post office, heart pounding. He didn't dare look over his shoulder.

Viola's eyes narrowed as she began to hear sounds. Grabbing a large branch from the ground, she gasped as she realized that there was a dark figure coming out of the city-- directly towards her.

Breathing heavily, he could just make out a figure among the trees. His first instinct told him it was a deer, so he didn't pay much mind, thinking it would run away as soon as it heard his footsteps. He risked looking behind him, checking to be sure the people weren't following him. This proved to be a bad idea, which he realized upon crashing into the supposed deer.

Viola gasped as she tumbled across the ground, shocked by the sudden impact of the running boy. Head pounding almost as much as her heart, she scrambled to a stand, eyes wide.

He jumped back, realizing he'd dropped his pack in the collision. Its contents had scattered across the forest floor and he hurried to pick them up and stuff them back in the bag. As soon as he'd finished, he got up and darted behind a tree, hoping whatever he'd run into didn't know he got away. From behind the trunk, he peered at the thing he'd knocked over. That's...not a doe... His breathing quickened at the realization it was another person. A girl about his age. He had to get away from here, and quick. Who knew what she was going to do to him?

Viola was about to scramble back, but froze when she saw the fear in his eyes. If he were going to try to kill me, he would have done it by now, wouldn't he? Carefully, she stood, hands held up beside her head. "I-- I'm not going to hurt you." Her voice was rusty from lack of use. It sounded strange, even to her. Carefully, she studied what bits of him that were outside of the tree's cover. A scrape had formed on his arm from the fall; it matched the one on her ankle. "Hey, you're hurt. I'm a doctor. I can help. Don't be scared."

He hesitated at her words. "N-no..." he managed to mumble. "I know traps when I see them." His fingers dug into the bark as he tensed to flee. The whole of him was shouting at him to run, but something stopped him. Perhaps he was just frozen in fear. He'd been in situations like this before. People lulling you into a false sense of security and safety, only to tear it away in the blink of an eye. He'd lived that exact lie for six years. The moment you trust someone is the moment it's too late.

She felt herself begin to move forward out of instinct, but forced her body to remain still. Sudden movements will spook him. Instead, she resumed speaking. "No, no, if you leave you'll get infected!" She dug around in the small satchel over her shoulder, keeping her eyes on him the entire time as gauze and cotton balls were pulled out at random. "See? I'm a medic. I won't hurt you."

Still regarding her with a combination of caution and suspicion, he moved slowly from behind the tree, not daring to wince when pain flared up in his ankle. Not wanting to turn his back on her, he reached behind him and fumbled around in his pack until his fingers found the Maglite. He gripped the heavy flashlight tightly, ready to hit her head if needed. Hesitant, he took small steps towards her, approaching slowly as if he were a wary animal.

Name: Bethany Kha Age: 17 Appearance: Vietnamese. She has long black hair and dark brown eyes, and several ear piercings. Medium height and is usually seen wearing a scruffy red plaid shirt wrapped around her waist, as it is the last thing she has left from her father. Other: Bethany and her brother were left orphaned after the disease killed their father, who was the only family they had left. She is short tempered and critical, and rarely displays the softer side of her personality. Bethany is usually willing to do whatever she needs to do to survive.
Name: Daniel Kha Age: 18 Appearance: Vietnamese. Short dark hair and light brown eyes. He has a thin scar on the left side of his face that reaches from his temple to his chin. About a head taller than his sister. Other: Same situation as Bethany. He is, however, the calmer and more levelheaded of the two, disliking conflict and violence, which has made it hard for him to do what is necessary to survive at times.

She eyed the flashlight, but made sure to let her face remain passive. "... Right. I'm going to need you to sit down."

The boy did as he was told, still tensed as if prepared to fight or flee. His gaze flicked to Viola's medical supplies and he vaguely wondered how she was able to get them. In his whole life, he'd only known maybe one or two people with more than a few bandages or a small bottle of rubbing alcohol. And even those were hard to come by. A new surge of fear overcame him when he realized that he was actually sitting in front of her, vulnerable. She could stab him at any moment. But the scarier part was realizing that she might actually be well-intentioned.

Carefully, Viola wet a cotton ball with rubbing alcohol. She hesitated before placing it over his raw flesh, looking up carefully. The sudden sting might scare him. "I'm going to put this on," she murmured. "It'll hurt a little, alright? Just stay still."

"I know," he mumbled, nodding slightly. He'd had to do this before, trading precious food for a few measly medical supplies which he'd used once before they were stolen. He awaited the sting of the alcohol patiently, knowing that this whole situation was most likely, hopefully, for the best.

Carefully, she dabbed the soaked cotton on the cut, quickly removing bandages from her bag. Im going to need to be more careful. At this rate, I'll have my supplies used up by the end of the week.

The boy winced slightly, sighing. His grip loosened on the Maglite as she tended his wound. The situation didn't seem so danerous anymore, but now another possibility worried him. He was indebted to her. She'd want food, money, or supplies. Stuff that he couldn't afford to give her. And if he couldn't pay up, he'd have only her mercy to appeal to.

It took a few more minutes, but she finished cleaning and wrapping the injury. "There. You should be fine, but keep that area clean to avoid infection."

After a nod, he spoke up again. "I'm...sorry. For running into you," he said carefully, standing. "I don't have much to offer, but I've got some bobby pins for picking locks, if you like." He knew it probably wasn't enough, but he needed his other things too much to give them away as payment.
