Nothing that I know of. Other than not tell her abut the alternate timeline... but how could she even know about that?

"I haven't mentioned it, and Giovanni can't have told anyone." She sounded a little uncomfortable at the mention of the alternate timeline. "What were we supposed to tell her anyway? She'd have freaked out massively if we did."

I agree. She'd certainly be a lot more suspicious of me, and we can't have that. She always used to say that I'd be a restless ghost. She had a nickname for me... 'Poltergeist.' If she knew that in one reality, I killed her...

Tessa shivered at her sister's words. "But it was just a moment of madness, right, Lizzie? Everything that you did in that timeline..." She wouldn't do it again. I know she wouldn't.

Quickly, Elizabeth changed the subject. I have a very important question to ask you. Please sit down for this.

Tessa frowned, but obliged. She seated herself carefully on the edge of the stool and stared down at the journal. "What is it?"

How much would you allow yourself to do if it meant bringing me back to life?

She paused, taken aback by the question. A nervous laugh escaped her lips. "Where's this come from? I... Well, what do you mean by bringing you back? Isn't that impossible? Or illegal? Or both?"

"I don't know what I'd have to do," she said, bewildered. "But if you could be back alive again, Lizzie... Well, I'd do anything."

There's a way. But I will never be able to do it alone. I need you to help me. I wouldn't normally involve you in anything Dark-Arts related, but you have a flesh vessel and I don't.

"Dark arts?" Her eyes widened. "I thought... But..." She can't mean it! Her dabbling about in that was what got us into the whole timeline mess in the first place!

"Lizzie..." She began, fumbling for the right words. "You know I would, but I'm not nearly as clever or good at magic as you. Dark arts... They're supposed to be really difficult, aren't they? What if I mess up? All sorts of things could go wrong."

I could teach you! Besides, I'd rather try than just sit here being dead. A pause. I hate death, Tessa. It's awful and lonely and terrifying. I'm so scared and so sad all of the time. I want to be alive again and hug mum and dad again and spend time with you the way we used to.

She could feel her hands trembling slightly. "Okay," she said quietly at last. "Okay, but it's going to take ages. I... I don't think I'm capable of the sort of stuff you can do. I'm not that powerful."

We're going to need to train you a bit beforehand. Start of small. It wasn't all that hard for me, how difficult can it really be for you?

This time, Tessa withheld her doubts, simply nodding instead. She thought back to when they had attended primary school; the sheer contrast in their performances had been obvious from the start. Whilst Elizabeth had received glowing reports, Tessa's had been rife with the phrases 'too vocal' and 'needs to apply herself more'. Perhaps they were more different than Lizzie seemed to think. "What first, then?"

Go to my old room. Pull back the floorboard directly under my window.

Tessa frowned, finding the carpet with her bare feet. She didn't speak as she stood and exited the room. When she reached the landing, her steps grew more cautious; her parents would ask questions about what she was doing in her dead sister's room, after all. A few minutes later, she was crouched by Elizabeth's window, fingers working at the floorboard to prise it up.
