Ricardo's humming broke through his thoughts and, giving up on the book, he set it down. Vincent sat up, now focused on trying to figure out the tune.

Re-starting the humming, Ricardo stared at himself critically int he mirror as he slapped some shaving cream over his chin and cheeks. He could feel a layer of stubble over his chin. Perhaps he should just start growing it out in seventh year. For now, though, it might be best to keep the facial hair under close control.

The humming was interrupted by a sharp swear in Spanish. Ricardo sighed, pressing some tissue to the cut that had just formed below his ear.

Ricardo sat on the edge of his bed. "Think of it like... transportation. Like, in theory, you are magically separated to a very small collection of particles. You're not dead, just in a separated state. And then those particles travel, and really grand speeds, and they reattach into you once they arrive. Sometimes, some of the particles don't really make it or don't attach themselves. That's when splinching happens."
