His tone softened as he pieced together his reply. "He's not here anymore, I learnt that today." It was also one of the first truths he had told that day. "We ended our last meeting on a rather negative note so I had come in hopes of repairing our relationship and to ask for a favour."

"I'm sorry to hear that," she said, tone dropping to an equally gentle and yet surprisingly uncommon one. "However, if you will excuse me, I am quite tired and I think I'll retire to my chambers for the night."

"Goodnight." He nodded in her direction, "I have something to attend to before I return to my quarters so we part ways here." Like finding that god forsaken library.

She nodded, holding back her curiosity about the stranger. There was something not quite right about him, but she was too tired and too on-edge to piece it together.

Amos let out a sigh of relief as he found himself free to walk away, he had detected some suspicion towards him but wasn't pressed on any matters which he was thankful for. Whilst he still had the option of wiping her memory, it would have been a rather unpleasant job and he would prefer to avoid tampering with the mind as much as he could, Amos had found over the years that humans in general were particularly fragile and could be broken easily if careless.

Jac made her way cautiously down to the dungeons, a torch held in one hand. The other lingered between holding up her skirts and returning to her back to push against the base of her spine. As she approached the Prince's cell, she lowered the torch, stopping slightly in the low space.

Joseph was positioned in his usual place in front of the cell, sat on the old, wooden stool that was his post. He raised his head upon hearing footsteps, lifting his torch to see who was approaching.

"I need to speak with the Prince," she told him, raising her head in its usual stubborn gesture of defiance.

Alain was sitting with his back to the opening of the jail cell, drawing circles in te ground with a finger.

"My lady." Joseph stood, bowing. "May I ask why you request to speak with him?"

"It is confidential business," she replied smoothly. "I'm sure if the Prince wishes to disclose such information, he will do so."

The guard nodded, sitting down once more. "To be sure, I am aware of the details of the prince's execution, as well as the effort to prove him innocent."

She simply nodded, remaining silent as she approached Alain's cell. She placed the torch carefully on the floor as she knelt to speak with him. "Your Highness."

Alain turned around. He was gaunt, paler than before, with an almost sickly grey tinge to his skin. "Lady Jaqueline. What brings you to my cell?"

"I searched the Advisor's room," Jac said briskly. "There were a few things of interest, but nothing clear enough to back up your claim. I had copies made of the paperwork I found before returning them." She pulled a few pieces of parchment from her cloak and passed them through the bars of the cell. "Make of them what you will."

He frowned as he skimmed the papers. "Very ambiguous. Vague. But they may prove useful. How many days do I have left until they hang me?"

She kept her expression carefully impassive. "They're constructing the gallows as we speak. You haven't got long."

Alain tensed, feeling his mouth go dry. "Hours, then," he whispered. "No time at all. This isn't enough, and finding an end to these leads could take weeks. It's... It's over."

"The only thing we can do is smuggle you away," she said, deadly serious. It was a notion she had come to consider seriously over the past few days. "You cannot die."

Alain studied her for a moment. Eliza isn't back yet. What if she has something? "Are you sure? I can't just leave my people. Running away would solidify any charges pressed against me, and place a price on my head. I'd be hiding for the rest of my life."
