The bucket of water fell from her grasp, hitting the floor and spilling. Kari clapped a hand over her mouth, feeling her breaths come deep and fast. Before her lay a body, easily recognisable as her mother despite the burn marks across her face. Her clothing was singed and hung off her blackened frame, and her dark hair was half reduced to ashes around her head.

Tikaani frowned, slowly making her way forward. When she was close enough to see, her face paled at the sight and her arms fell limp. The water she had been bending fell to the ground with a splash.

The Earthbender dropped to her knees, tentatively reaching out to touch her mother's scorched skin. She withdrew with a choked sob. "Mother..."

Hiranya had run after Tikaani, hands lit ablaze, but suddenly stopped at the sight of the body and the girl.

"These are burns," Kari said, voice breaking as she wiped her eyes hastily. "A Firebender visited my house last night asking for directions - it must have been him."

Hiranya quickly put her fists out. She had seen grief like this-- in any case, the one who suffered would point the finger at anyone with even a vague connection to the death.

Kari reached for her mother's pocked, subtly withdrawing a small locket and a few coins. She doesn't need them anymore, and it looks like I'm completely alone now. The Earthbender struggled to her feet, stepping back a few paces to look upon the body. It occurred to her that, past the shock and initial wave of emotion induced by her mother's death, she felt no great grief. It unsettled her. Goodness knows she was insensitive and cold, but I never wanted her dead.

Hiranya frowned as she saw the girl stand. Odd. That was her mother... shouldn't she still be sobbing hysterically?

She dropped into a stance, a little unsteady but knowing it was probably what her mother would want. Her foot slid across the floor and the ground started to vibrate as columns of earth rose up around the body, twisting and reaching out to each other as they climbed.

Tikaani watched Kari bend, not knowing what to say. What a horrible thing to find.

Rajiv hurried up to them, stopping once he saw the Earthbender. In silent awe, he watched her movements-- much more flat-footed and blocky than a waterbender's, but beautiful in their own way.

She stopped only when the strange, twisted tomb was complete, and rested her hands against it, brow furrowed. What shall I do now? I have nowhere else to go, no relatives... Only my father, but he's been missing for years.

Rajiv gasped, staring at the structure. He turned to Tikaani, excited. "Can she be my earthbending teacher?"

"You'll have to ask her," Tikaani replied quietly.

"I'm not sure it is up to an Earthbender peasant to train the Avatar," Kari said, back still turned as she caught drift of their conversation. If she was surprised that the young boy escorted by a group of children was potentially the most powerful Bender in the world, she did not show it.

Hiranya crossed her arms, sighing. "Do you really have anywhere else to go? By your reaction, I assume that was your only other guardian left to take care of you."

Her brow furrowed. "My only other relative is my father. He has been away working in the army for many years. In any case, I am old enough to care for myself, do you not think?"

Hiranya shrugged. "I can't really be a judge on that particular matter."
"Pretty please?" Rajiv stared up at her with earnest blue eyes. "We're going to go on an adventure! Don't you want to come?"

Kari's expression softened somewhat as she looked down at him. "Very well, but I will not be rushed about anywhere. If I teach, it will be on my own terms."

Jampo stumbled through the woods towards the clearing by the river where his bison was. When he'd had his fill of getting stuck on brambles, with a burst of air, he launched himself onto a tree branch. Being able to leap through the forest just under the canopy brought him to Dawa in just a few minutes. His bison groaned at the sight of him and Jampo gave her a couple apologetic pats.
