She sighed. "Riley, you always do that. You start talking like you want to tell me something and then you just bail and change the subject." She stopped walking just as she was pushing the door open, turning to face him and crossing her arms over her chest. "What have you been meaning to do?"

Jane fell into a stunned silence. She'd only caught pieces of his outburst, but that had been more than enough to understand it. She opened her mouth as if she was going to say something, but decided against it. This happened several times and Jane was sure she must've looked like a gasping fish. Eventually, she found her voice. "Riley, I—um..." Only then did she realize how warm her face had gotten. She knew she was probably quite red by now, which only made her more embarrassed.
