Senatus tilted his head. Not many useful District-given skills, then. Tentatively, he signed his next question. Did you volunteer or did you get selected, if it's okay for me to ask?

Her bottom lip trembled, and the tears threatened to return at the very memory of the reaping. "They picked my name out. Nobody really volunteers back at home, unless they're desperate."

If it makes you feel any better, my name was picked too, Senatus signed, putting on mask of silent empathy. No one volunteered in my place this year, which is quite unusual for my District. It wasn't entirely a lie-- "Hiram, Senatus" was certainly the randomly chosen name read aloud at the Reaping, but the authorities in Two had already determined a set of potential tributes that were not to be interrupted should they be selected. Although a technically illegal process, District One did it as well and the Capitol simply turned a blind eye to both. Anything for more entertaining Games that year, and the small and weak of each district were most certainly not entertaining.

Her understanding of his signing was limited, but she understood most of what he was saying. In her home district most people learned to sign; the roar of the machines in the textile industry meant that it was very difficult to hold a conversation at work otherwise. And so Ariella's parents had done their best to teach their daughter the basics. "Are you scared as well?" She asked, timid. He was strong, and didn't seem like the type of person to be easily scared. But then this was the Games, and from what she knew already, it tended to bring the worst out of people.

Senatus paused, tilting his head. Should he fake fear? It didn't fit so well with the illusion he was trying to create, but at the same time, no fear would be suspicious. For a brief moment, he wondered whether he was sincerely afraid himself. Huh. For this one moment, I will be telling the truth.
Yes, he signed with a small exhale through his nose. But I try not to dwell on these emotions. It won't do anyone any good, after all.

Ariella looked at him - properly looked - for a couple of seconds. She was young and naive, and could not discern his expression. He doesn't let anything show on his face. So she spoke again, ever more shy as she opened up to the older boy. "My father told me that fear is good because it gives you energy and makes you run faster. He said that fear keeps you alive in the Games."

Senatus felt a small smile tug at the corner of his lips. That type of talk would never have been tolerated in Two. That is very wise, he signed, giving her a solemn nod. If I may ask, was your father a former Victor?

She shook her head. "No. Not many people win back at home. He watches the Games every year, though. I think he enjoys it a bit."

Senatus raised his eyebrows, but decided not to comment. It was very common for the Games to be treated as a legitimate celebration and spectacle in his own District, but it was mostly because Two was so competitive and such a popular District to win every year. It had always made him wonder how anyone from places like Eight or Twelve could possibly enjoy them, if they were slaughtered every year. I don't believe that I learned your name.

"Ariella Lawless," she said simply. It was a difficult name for her to say as a child, but she was no longer young enough to stumble on the l's and the words left her mouth with little resistance. "What's your name?"

Senatus Hiram, he signed out, keeping every letter's hand signal clear and concise. I do think we'll be seeing more of each other in this time.

She squinted, trying to follow his hand movements. "Sen- Senatus?" She wasn't even sure if she was pronouncing it right - it was a strange name, after all.

Yes. Just like that, he signed with a small nod. It was the name that his adoptive parents had given him, something much more fitting of a citizen of District Two than the one he had been born with.

Cirillo twiddled his fingers. The amount of people around him was starting to make him uncomfortable, and he was getting drowsy. The shiny material no longer intrigued him, and his attention span was dwindling. This is soooo boring.

As Senatus was guided away by an overzealous, talkative stylist, Sappho narrowed her eyes at Arellia. The boy definitely moved like someone who knew his stature, definitely elegant, definitely fast. But something told her that he wasn't the type to join a group and take orders, and was definitely not the type to have in a group at all. He gave her an uneasy feeling, despite having just seen him act like a complete sap. Why would he talk to the little kid, then? She doesn't look useful for anything.
