The next morning, Moby jerked awake at the feeling of something moving across his face. When he sat up, the thing scurried away. So there are animals here. the knowledge comforted him, even if the mouse had taken him by surprise. He rubbed his eyes, looking over to where Viola was. Still asleep. Moby got up and stretched. The sun had already risen, which meant less of a chance of breakfast. At least they still had Fig Newtons. "Hey. Viola." Moby was shaking her shoulder lightly to wake her, glancing around cautiously as he did so.

Viola's eyes fluttered open. For a moment, her heart stopped as she stared into the eyes of an unfamiliar male. Then, the previous day's memories hit her like a truck. She shook her head. "Oh... morning, Moby."

He took a step back. "Sorry for waking you up, but if we want to get anything in time for lunch, we have to head out now." Moby wasn't entirely sure how they'd be getting this lunch. They could try to find animals to hunt in the woods, but as it got closer to midday, they would all go into hiding to escape the heat. And they didn't even have any real weapons anyway.

Viola sat up, brushing hair from her eyes. "Y-yeah," she mumbled, feeling the emptiness deep in her stomach. "Food. I was... I was thinking. Maybe we could scavenge for plants to eat?"

"That...might be a better idea," Moby agreed quietly, scrapping the idea of hunting. "I know a few good ones to eat. We're lucky it's summer..." He shouldered his pack, fidgeting anxiously and glancing at the exit. He was eager to get back out into the forest, where it was more open. It made things easier if he needed to escape, and he didn't mind fresh air free of dust and hay particles.

"Alright. I'll eat whatever you eat. You're the street kid." She slipped off of the hay, some stray bits threaded through her black hair as she picked up the medical supplies. "Maybe if we eat well, we can do something about the holes in the roof. I have a feeling it's going to rain tonight."

Moby nodded. "You're probably right. There hasn't been a storm in a week or so, I think." He looked up through the roof at the sky, watching the fleecy clouds pass overhead for a bit before turning his attention back to the task at hand. "Alright, let's go. I'f we're lucky, we might find some berries or something."

Viola made her way out of the barn door, looking excited at the prospects of food. "Hey, if all else fails, we can probably kill ourselves a rat or two, right?"

"Y-yeah. We could. If we can find any." Moby hurried to lead the way, taking a deep breath as soon as he was outside. If there were any berry bushes, they'd probably be by a creek. He looked around, unsure of where to go first. He turned to Viola, asking, "Do you know of any streams or creeks around here?"

"There's one west of here. At least, I'm pretty sure it's west. Anyway, it's not too long a walk, so it's pretty convenient."

"Good. That's good. We'll have a steady source of water too, then." He found the sun, which was still rising, and turned his back on it, heading through the woods. This place was pleasant. So much different from the woods he used to live next to. In hindsight, they'd been extremely lucky on the walk to the barn. Robbers were everywhere back there. But now, there didn't seem to be any trace of them. Moby visibly relaxed the farther away they walked from the barn. The sunlight filtering through the canopy was comforting, and soon, he could hear the soft babbling of the creek Viola had told him about.

"You know," Viola murmured, taking in her surroundings, "I sometimes think about the fact that I would never have gone out and seen things like this, had the pandemic never happened. It's almost cruel how beautiful it is out."

Moby crossed his arms over his chest, almost as if he were hugging himself. "Yeah. I know what you mean... I guess. It is beautiful though." When they reached the stream, Moby stopped suddenly at the bank, staring at the rushing water that slid smoothly over the stones. He hadn't seen many creeks in his life and every time, he was intrigued and amazed at how clean water could be. It didn't have to be chalky and strange-tasting like the city water. He stood there, almost mesmerized by it.

Viola took in a breath, reaching out her hand to pick up a stone. It was smooth from being under the running water for so long. The entire stream was cold and crystal-clear. It actually looks like this. I thought that was just in postcards or pictures...

Violet returned from the back of the house later that evening, all sides of it having been rigged. "I used the net from your old soccer goal in the backyard. I hope that's okay." She gazed out the window, eyes running along the twine that hovered a few inches above the ground. "It won't do much good during the day, but it'll be harder for people to see at night."

He rubs the back of his neck sheepishly, shrugging a little. ''My' might be a bit of stretch. This isn't really my house, after all, and I'm only... Borrowing it from former occupants, I guess. But either way, I don't suppose it matters with no chance to use it. Great initiative, though!' His grin returns full force, a hand carding once through his hair. 'And as long as it does some good in general, right? Besides, it should make the whole place feel a lot safer, so it's at least good for peace of mind.' One of his hands moves over, to rest on her head and ruffle her hair slightly. He's not sure how she'll take the action, but he's doing his best to make sure there's no feeling of ill will behind it.

It actually looks like this. I thought that was just in postcards or pictures...Breaking his gaze away from the water, Moby scanned the banks. If there were any berry bushes, they should be heavy with fruit by now. Upon spotting dark clumps on a bramble further downstream, he let out an inhuman noise that resembled one of excitement. In was on the opposite bank, but the stream was small. And there were stepping stones, too. Moby hopped across them, hurrying towards the bramble. He couldn't believe their good luck. And there were so many! "Blackberries!"

Viola hurried after Moby, eyes narrowed as she put her arm in his path. "Wait. Are you sure they're blackberries?"

"Of course! There aren't even any poisonous berries that look like them. It's got the thorns and spiky leaves. And the berries look exactly like blackberries. It's fine. Trust me." Moby moved past Viola, lifting the hem of his shirt to create a small makeshift pouch as he hurried to start picking. The ones on the outside branches were easy, thankfully, but he knew as soon as they finished with these, they'd have to brave the thorns.

Viola studied the thorns. "Let me take care of those on the inside. I have gloves in my bag-- that's probably the only thing I stole from the clinic that they would have been fine with." She rummaged through her bag, pulling out a box of powdery blue gloves. "We can empty out the box and put the berries in there, too."
