On Nicolas's horizontal row, a neat line of symbols indicated his feelings. Where it crossed with Leo's vertical row lay a diamond. Where it crossed with Xander's, a club. Elizabeth's intersection held a small black spade. Jane's held a heart, followed by a question mark. On the space where his name crossed Tessa's, however, lay a large red heart, neatly colored in.

Tessa's gaze roamed over the square a few times, blinking to be sure. Then, slowly, she lifted her quill to the parchment, scribbling out the hearts linking her and Xander and replacing them with a club before locating her row. The tip of the quill hovered over the surface for a few moments before she inked in a couple of neat hearts. Tessa placed the quill down and handed the parchment to him again. "I- erm, I've made a few additions."
