The advisor narrowed his eyes. "Pretentious boy," he spat scornfully. "You have no power. Not yet. Not ever. Your sentence will be execution once you fail to provide any alibis in your trial. You have no one to vouch for you."

Alain raised an eyebrow, putting on a smug face, despite feeling only cold dread inside. "You just wait." Still, he knew it was hopeless. He had no way to prove it-- he doubted there was even Eliza's blood on the corridor anymore. And there was no way to get to her. The next time she'd see him would be at his execution, for sure.

"I have no time for your bluffs. You have two days and two nights to prepare for your trial. Until then, according to the law, you may send one letter, but a guard must supervise you as you write it. I am reluctant to grant you this right, but seeing as I couldn't find a way around that law, I have no choice. Joseph will stay here with you."

Alain nodded, glancing at the guard. He remembered Joseph always playing with him as a young boy, on the days he was feeling particularly depressed about not being able to leave. He felt a strange sadness at the fact that this guard probably saw him as murderer. It was enough to make him avert his eyes in shame.

The guard had on hand a piece of parchment, a quill, and some ink, provided to him by the advisor to give to Alain. "One letter only. You get no more parchment than this," Joseph reminded him, passing the materials through the iron bars.

"Thank you." He crouched down on the floor of his cell, wondering what to write. Then, he vaguely remembered something from Eliza's storybook. Of a man wrongly accused of murder, being imprisoned. The story ended with the man being proved innocent... The day after his execution. He set the wuill to paper.

Joseph took the letter and scanned it, though he couldn't read. He decided that it was short enough to not be of any threat and nodded to the prince. "Very well. Tell me where it is to be sent and I will have a messenger hoy deliver it for you."

The guard nodded and within ten minutes' time, a messenger had come to pick up the letter. "Truthfully, I hope you wrote to someone who can help you. You'll need all the help you can get."
