Eliza nodded, realizing what was happening, what they were coming down here for. "Be careful, Alain," she murmured. "I'll see you soon." She pressed a fleeting kiss to his lips before moving back into the dark shadows of the cell.

Alain felt a blush tinge his cheeks, just as harsh arms hoisted him up to a stand. The knights were wordless as they half-dragged, half-walked him out of the cell. The prince cast a last look at Joseph over his shoulder before he was out of sight.

Eliza came out from hiding as soon as she couldn't hear footsteps any longer. She and Joseph exchanged a look before the two of them hurried after Alain and the guards. Eliza clutched the vial tightly, the cool glass pressing into her palm. They had to get there and show everyone...

Alain was seated in his quarters, adjusting the crown that nestled in his dark hair. He had been crowned the last week, but was still unused to the new weight that he had to carry. That day he would have to select new staff to replace those that had supported the advisor and therefore betrayed the crown. This is going to be so dull. Eliza put a gentle hand on his shoulder as she came up behind him. "Do you know who you're going to appoint in place of the former advisor and his supporters?" she asked quietly after a moment.

He turned around, feeling himself relax at her touch. After a moment, the king sighed. "No. I think I may appoint Lady Jacqueline as my new advisor; I do owe her... but something tells me that she harbors to kind feelings for my rule."

She nodded. "From what I've heard, she's resourceful, to say the least. She has the potential to be useful... But I trust your decision-making."

"She's my best option. I think I will put her in that position," he decided. "The rest can be filled by whatever nobles actually care about it and know what they're doing."

Eliza nodded. "That sounds reasonable." She squeezed his shoulder gently. "You'll be expected to announce your choices soon. You might want to finish preparing."

At that moment the doors at the end of the hall opened and one of the guards entered, dropping into a low bow. He straightened up, adjusting his helm and clearing his throat before speaking. "Your Highness, the Lady Jacqueline begs audience."

Alain sighed, turning towards the door. "Allow her to enter."

He bowed again, head almost touching the floor in his haste to carry out the King's bidding.
A few moments later, Jac entered. She held herself with the familiar poise of a woman well-versed in the ways of the court, yet one hand was placed subtly by the spot beneath her left ribs. Once she reached the centre of the hall, the Lady dropped into a curtsey. "Your Majesty."

Alain tilted his head, expression revealing nothing as he studied her. "My lady. What brings you here?"

She straightened, clasping her hands before her. "Your Majesty, it is a... sensitive matter. One which requires the utmost fidelity, if it please you."

He turned to Eliza, an apologetic look in his eyes. "I'll call you back in when we're finished speaking."

Jac waited until they were alone to speak again. "I require a husband, Sire." There was no point in beating around the bush, after all.

He raised his eyebrows, caught off guard by her words. Does she mean...? "Haven't a few nobles already put forth propositions to your father?"

"My father, for all his years of service, has no taste in men," she said delicately, choosing her words with great care. "And as it happens, I very much need to be married before this month ends."

He studied her for a moment, brow furrowing as he heard her story. "What part do you wish for me to play in your... situation?"

"You are king, are you not?" She said, slightly exasperated. She paused to allow herself to calm down. "Your Majesty, it would please me greatly if you could find me a suitor of noble descent to wed before the month ends. You know very well that a lady may not arrange her own marriage, and you are the only one who could question my father's authority in this situation."
