The courtyard is positioned by the main castle doors, and is open to the general public during fĂȘtes, carnivals and public executions. The royal balcony overlooks it, as well as some of the bedroom windows in the citadel. During times of plague or war, the bodies of the dead are laid out by the steps. The entrances to the castle, however, are heavily guarded at all times.

Jac paused by the steps of the citadel, clutching the stone column beside her as she recovered her breath. She had been feeling particularly delicate of late, and at first she had assumed it to just be the early arrival of her flower. Yet the fatigue she was experiencing was completely unfamiliar to her.

The gallows were already set up. Hung from the rickety wooden structure was a single rope, round and just the rise size to snap a certain delicate, pale neck. From the royal balcony, the throne meant for the King to watch was empty.

She glanced upwards, wincing at the sight of them. Having found very little evidence to back up the prince's claim in the advisor's chambers, she had been reduced to asking around the lower parts of the city instead. A few snippets of information had caught her attention, however, and it was worth looking into further.

The executioner bowed at the presence of the noble. "My lady. You look faint. Is it because of a sight so grim as the gallows?"

A slight smirk, well concealed behind the tips of her fingers. "For fear of being too crude, I will not indulge in too much detail, but the fairer sex are custom to many more grim sights than the gallows." Her other hand rested above her hip, applying light pressure to her lower back, however, as if it pained her.

He chuckled. "My wife is a veteran of the wars women face every full moon. Would you like me to escort you to the royal medic?"

"That won't be necessary, thank you," she shook her head, tone ever so slightly clipped. "I think something else ails me. It will pass soon, I am sure."

"I wish you luck with this ailment, Madame." A last bow before he made his way to check the gallows.

She nodded, waiting for him to return to the gallows before heading up the steps to the palace, still unsettled by the pain in her lower back.

Alain could feel the sun beating on his face, almost more uncomfortable than the heavy hands of the knights keeping him rooted to his spot. He was stood before the gallows, nose inches away from the heavy rope as his crimes were read aloud. Still, the prince wasn't listening, instead directing his gaze towards the balcony. His balcony, now occupied by the advisor.

The advisor looked back at him with his beady eyes. The skin around his eyes crinkled with a triumphant smile.
Meanwhile, Eliza and Joseph were shoving their way through the crowd, fighting to be able to see Alain. The falconer looked down at the glass vial in her hand once more before returning her gaze to the gallows.

Alain gave him a defiant glare, but a bead of sweat dripped from his cheek. Eliza, where are you? I'm inches away from hell right now!

Eliza began to panic as the executioner stepped forward. Shoving her way past the last couple people standing between her and the wooden platform, she climbed up, breathing hard. "Wait."

Alain felt the knights' hands tighten around him. He stared at the advisor, gauging his reaction in satisfied, relishing silence.

Jac stood in the crowd, expression as impassive as ever. She could not, however, escape the flicker of surprise across her face as Eliza spoke. So this is the Prince's 'questionable' friend, she thought, passing a handkerchief over her lips.

Eliza held up the tiny glass bottle for everyone to see. "This was found in the advisor's quarters. It is a vial that once contained poison. Poison likely given to the king."

The executioner crossed his arms. "How can you prove that it wasn't just planted there?"

"It has the advisor's mark on it. It is his," she countered, handing the man the glass object.

The knights let go of Alain's arms as the prince took the vial. "It appears that I have been framed. And that man--" he pointed to the advisor with an almost mad-looking grin. "Is the true murderer of the King. It's this evidence against none in his favor. My first decree as the true King of Camelot is off with his head."
